cance than its locality. It will
draw national attention by
honoring one of its major foun-
ders. The Anne Frank Insti-
tute, the center that em-
phasizes Holocaust studies,
will, on that day, recognize the
achievements of one of its most
distinguished leaders, Dr.
Franklin H. Littell, on his 70th
birthday.
The June date will therefore
have triple significance on a
world scale: the importance at-
tached to a movement inaugu-
rated under the name of one of
the most remembered martyrs
of the Nazi criminality, the
importance of its cause em-
phasizing the teaching and
remembering the Holocaust,
the recognition of the justice
seeking and pursuing devo-
tions of one of the most distin-
guished Christian scholars,
Dr. Franklin H. Littell.
In every respect, the
Philadelphia-based function
invites acclaim. Would that
every community in the land
were able to emulate the Anne
Frank devotions! A sharing,
even distance-wise, in the June
11 ceremonies, should encour-
age it.

The acclaim for Franklin
Littell is in itself a Jewish re-
sponsibility on a global basis.
The basic facts about this
Christian scholar are worth
the summarizing above the
planned event in his honor.
What follows are not boasts.
Here are the facts:

On the evening of June 11,
1987, the Institute will hold a
testimonial dinner to celeb-
rate the 70th birthday of
Franklin H. Littell, our
founder and honorary
chairman. Dr. Littell
pioneered in research and
teaching the Holocaust, and
was primarily responsible
for making Philadelphia a
major center in the field —
with the first system-wide
instruction on the
Holocaust in both public
and parochial schools.
He has published many
books and articles in the
field and also done a great
deal of practical work — as
founder and first chairman
of the National Institute on
the Holocaust (now called
the Anne Frank Institute),
as co-founder and first
chairman of the Annual
Scholars' Conference on the
Church Struggle and the
Holocaust, as founder and
first chairman of the Annual
Teaching Conference on the
Holocaust, as director of the
first Ph.D. in Holocaust
Studies in the USA, as the
first Christian member of
the International Council of
Yad Vashem and a lecturer
since its inception in the
Yad Vashem Teachers' In-
stitute, and as a member of
the U.S. Holocaust Memo-
rial Council.

Nothing could be more de-

serving than Elie Wiesel's ac-
ceptance of the honorary
chairmanship for this function.
Wiesel thereby symbolizes the
universal Jewish mark of re-
spect and expression of appre-
ciation for Dr. Littell's services
to Israel and the Jewish people.
Thereby, he has also
encouraged dignified respect
for his faith in the general
endorsement of all that has
been faithfully shared by all
religious observances and in
showing abhorrence for the
prejudices against which Dr.
Littell has been laboring and
continues to be engaged while
activating the most humane of
our time in the battle against
injustice.
During the years that Dr.
Littell had been writing for
this newspaper he was the con-
sistently courageous advocate
of everything that is decent for
all peoples, Jewry and Israel
being the major benefactors of
his devotions.
It should be noted that Mrs.
Littell (Marcia Sachs), always
joins her husband in his devo-
tional tasks. By editing and in-
spiring the important volume
Liturgies on the Holocaust, re-
viewed recently on this page,
she added to the glories of the
Littell name. It is a name de-
eply deserving of all the honors
accorded it.

Trifa's Backers Add
Insults To Injuries

Valerian Trifa admitted
associations with the worse of
the World War II mass mur-
derers of Jews in Romania.
Else he would not have been
deported and stripped of U.S.
citizenship which he acquired
falsely.
His friends in his church
nevertheless hail him as a
martyred saint.
That's something that must
not be permitted to pass into
the records without challenge.

Of the many headlines in the
sensational case in which he
confessed to the records accus-
ing him of Nazi crimes, the De-
troitNews, of Oct. 8, 1982 read:
"Trifa Admits Past Ties;
Agrees to Go."

The Jewish News, Oct. 15,
1982, carried the story with a
report of the conclusion of the
trial held here in the Federal
Building: "U.S., Archbishop
Trifa Sign Deportation
Agreement." It headlined the
Trifa confession and appeared
over his signature.

The least newspaper reports
could have been expected to
state were the basic facts about
a Nazi criminal who was being
deported — the first such de-
portation ordered by the U.S.
Justice Department. Instead,
the reports gave a platform to
falsifiers of the Trifa records
and a resort to martyrology
about an admitted criminal.
