Alia's Family Restaurant,
owned by Jim and Alia Sage,
opened its doors July 17, 1986
. . . seating 165 . . . at Green-
field, north of 11 Mile Road,
former site of Irving's Delica-
tessen . . . now located at
LaMirage Mall on Northwest-
ern Hwy . . . and can boast of
all four customer look-for as-
pects.
The Oakland County Health
Department is tough . . . espe-
cially some of its inspectors .. .
Average grade hovers around
the 80s mark . . . Jim and Alia
received a 94 recently . . . The
menu is extremely diversified
. . . with six appetizers, six
salads, 26 sandwiches that in-
clude 15 cold on three types of
bread, six melts on grilled pita,
three hot and six burgers .. .
There are 14 entrees plus eight
seafood favorites, a children's
menu, seven "side dishes and
ten desserts (five homemade.)
A breakfast menu has nine
omelettes, nine pancakes and
blintzes (all made with or
without Eggbeaters), with six
specials . . . There are 13 lunch
specials, and six dinner spe-
cials that change daily.
The waitresses try as hard as
possible to create customer
pleasantness . . . and work
feverishly toward constant ef-
ficiency.
Remodeling at Alia's took
Jim and Alia six months .. .
Today, it has a large green
awning outside that seems to
set the pace for Alia's color
scheme inside.
Boxed mirrors are all about
. . . there's a service counter for
waitresses . . . with green and
striped white awning hovering
above.
The dining area is wide and
spacious . . . with all booths of
padded green leather seats and
green clothbacks . . . plus nine
tables . . . a large aquarium .. .
plants all about, etched glass,
framed pictures, ceiling fans,
recessed lighting, dark woods,
light woods, cloth on wood
panels separating booths.
When Jim and Alia sold Re-
mal's in Oak Park and took
over the former Irving's which
at that time was no longer
owned by the Guttman family
(Rose, Irving, etc. now at
LaMirage) the head chef im-
mediately became Chris Hat-
zilias, who used to own and op-
erate Beef 'n Bird on Southfield
Road.
Original intent was to also
sell corned beef and pastrami
. . . among other delicatessen
products . . . in conjunction
with their variety of foods .. .

Jim and Alia make friends
easily . . . He is always at the
restaurant . . . and many cus-
tomers have followed him from
Remal's in Oak Park.
Remal's was their first full-
service restaurant . . . Jim and
Alia had it a year-and-a-half
. . . which time he calls his
"learning period".
Alia's is one of the few res-
taurants that have a Braille
menu available . . . The last
one was trascribed September
1986 by Ruth Kushner, Sister-
hood of Cong. Shaarey Zedek
. . . in sponsorship with the
Tri-County Braille Volunteers
. . . She will make a transcrip-
tion of the new menu.
It is open seven days . . .
Monday thru Friday, 7 a.m. to
10 p.m. . . . 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m.
to 8 p.m.
Although many restaurants
would be very happy; a 94 per-
cent rating was a disappoint-
ment to Jim . . . He got a fine 98
percent at Remal's in Oak Park
. . . Cleanliness is a large
byword with Jim and Alia .. .
as one of the most important
points in their running of a res-
taurant.
What the Guttman's had
built up had been torn down by
its next owner . . . But Jim and
Alia Sage have brought it back
to life again . . . as Alia's Fam-
ily Restaurant.

CHICAGO-BASED Best's
Kosher Sausage Company has
developed a refrigerated roll of
corned beef hash which can be
used as a quick gourmet entree
or sliced, rewrapped and then
stored in the refrigerator. . . .
Best's own extra-lean corned
beef, made from choice beef, is
the prime ingredient . . . The
beef is cured, seasoned, cooked,
then sliced and blended with
Idaho potatoes and premium
onions.
