Since then, Yarnitsky has
designed six machines,
some of which are
employed today by the
world diamond industry. He
is currently designing a
state-of-the-art, fully
automatic diamond factory
that will have the capacity
to polish stones of all types
and sizes. The automated
plant will employ robotics,
computers, and the latest
in flexible manufacturing-
systems technologies. Ac-
cording to Professor Yarnit-
sky, diamantaires will mere-
ly have to choose their
rough diamonds and turn
on the electricity in the
morning in this robot-
serviced plant.
"The fully automated
plant can polish any shape
of diamond. It will change
the angle for every facet.
For a computer this task is
simple. It may even create
new forms of diamonds."
Twenty years ago, Pro-
fessor Yarnitsky was in-
volved in the development
of another first — a semi-
automatic polishing
machine. "We made the
first semi-automatic
machine for polishing, and
local industry responded
positively. But the feeling
that diamonds must be
polished by hand prevailed,
so the machine was never
mass-produced." A few
years afterwards, De Beers
in London sponsored a
semi-automatic polishing
machine, and Professor
Yarnitsky "got a green
light to produce an Israeli
machine.
Professor Yarnitsky has
continued his work in R &
D. In cooperation with the
staff of the Technion's Dia-
mond Laboratory, he is cur-
rently working on an im-
proved model of a fully
automatic machine for
polishing 16 facets. Called
the David 3 (named for his
son), it will be manufac-
tured by Amcoram, an Am-
cor subsidiary. The machine
divides diamonds with
more accuracy than can be
achieved by hand. And one
operator can serve as many
as eight machines at once.
Professor Yarnitsky has
also designed a girdle-
polishing machine called
Dafna (named for his
daughter), which was in-
troduced 15 years ago. (The
"girdle" refers to the dia-
mond's center.) Tbday, there
are 5,000 Dafnas in use in
the world.
The Diamond Laboratory
has also produced two
models of a bruting
machine, the latest of
which is currently being
tested in a few Israeli fac-
