THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

War to win."
Quincy, Illinois,' was a spe-
cial place for Abraham Lincoln
of Illinois. On June 2, 1864, his
old friend Abraham Jonas,
postmaster of Quincy, lay dy-
ing. Something was gnawing
at his heart. Though he was an
abolitionist all his life and a
friend of Mr. Lincoln from the
time the "two Abes" served to-
gether in the Illinois legisla-
ture, Abraham Jonas' four sons
were serving in the Confeder-
ate Army. One son was cap-
tured by Union forces.
Mrs. Jonas wanted her hus-
band to see him before dying.

A braham Lincoln

She learned that son Charles
was being kept in an Army
prison on Johnson Island, Il-
linois, some 50 miles from
Quincy. The commandant
would not parole a Yankee
turncoat who had joined tip
with the Confederacy and then
was captured.
Mrs. Jonas wired her old
friend Mr. Lincoln to intercede.
Several hours later, the
President sat at his desk in the
White House and signed a spe-
cial order dated June 2, 1864:
"Issue to Charles A. Jonas who
is now held a prisoner of war at
Johnson Island a parole for a
period of three weeks to visit
his dying father, Abraham
Jonas, in Quincy, Ilinois."
Charles arrived home just in
time to receive his father's
blessing before he closed his
eyes and died. Two days after
Jonas died, Lincoln paid an-
other tribute of friendship to
his old friend and comrade.
Lincoln appointed Mrs. Jonas
to serve out her husband's un-
expired term in the Quincy
post office.
Abraham Lincoln was often
called Father Abraham be-
cause he was like the brave
patriarch of the Bible. He_ too
smashed the false idols of his
time, which were slavery and
injustice. He taught that all
men are brothers. No matter
what the color of our skin, we
are all the children of One God.

Jerusalem (JTA) — Defense
Minister Yitzhak Rabin said
last Monday that Israel
would do its utmost to secure
the release "alive and well" of
an Israel Air Force flyer held
prisoner in Lebanon. But he
refused to comment to report-
ers on a proposal said to have
been made by Nabih Berri,
leader of the Shiite Amal
militia, to include the flyer in
a swap for 400 Palestinian
prisoners held by Israel and
by the Israel-backed South
Lebanon Army (SLA).
Vice Prime Minister and
Foreign Minister Shimon
Peres told reporters that
Israel would not yield to the
demands of a terrorist group
for the release of the 400
prisoners in exchange for the
lives of four hostages — three
Americans and an Indian na-
tional — kidnapped in West
Beirut.
A group calling itself the
Islamic Jihad (Holy War) for
the Liberation of Palestine
has threatened to kill the
hostages unless Israel coin-
plied. "Nobody has ap-
proached Israel and Israel
will not take any initiative on
that issue. If anyone has an
offer to make, let him ap-

proach Israel in an orderly
manner," Peres said, adding
that Israel does not accept
ultimatums.
The reported offer by Berri
to exchange the flyer, an
Israel Air Force navigator
captured by Amal after his
plane was shot down over
Lebanon last October, raised
speculation here and abroad
that a deal could be made
whereby the hostages and the
flyer would be released for the
jailed Palestinians without
Israel or the U.S. seeming to
surrender to terrorist
demands.
But the release of 400 con-
victed Palestinians would cer-
tainly have severe political
repercussions in Israel. The
exchange of 1,150 Palestinian
and Shiite prisoners, many
convicted terrorists, for three
Israeli soldiers in 1985, raised
a public outcry. The govern-
ment has all but acknowl-
edged it was a mistake and in-
dicated it would not be
repeated.
Israeli officials insist there
has been no pressure what-
ever from the U.S. for Israel
to deal with the kidnappers of
the Americans.
