puters and robots.

Israel Conducts High
Tech Diamond Research

"[Jaffa, Israel — Jews have
Ilplayed a key role in the
diamond business since the
Middle Ages. The in-
dustry's international
nature made it suited to a
widely dispersed people,
who culturally bridged
Europe and the East. In
addition, the diamond trade
was not controlled by the
medieval craft guilds, which
excluded Jews. And
diamonds were easy to
transport in times of
persecution.
It is, therefore, not sur-
prising that today Israel is
among the world's top
diamond-polishing centers
and is a leader in develop-
ing new concepts in the
field. More than $1 billion
worth of the polished gems
are exported from Israel
each year.
Today, the handshake and
the Yiddish exchange
"mazel ubracha" ("good
luck and blessings") in-
dicate the closing of a deal,
just as they did centuries
ago. The diamonds being
sold, however, may have
been prepared using the
most modern of techniques
and technology. In Israel,
one driving force behind
bringing technology to the
diamond business has been

the Stone Thchnology
Laboratory in the Faculty
of Mechanical Engineering
and a founder and former
chief scientist of the Israel
Diamond Institute.
Yarnitsky recalls, "I
became interested in the
field by accident 25 years
ago while advising a stu-

dent on a project. I was
fascinated by the properties
of diamonds. The diamond
is the hardest substance
yet discovered by man.
Though it is the purest
substance in nature, it is
composed of carbon, one of
the most common elements
found in all living things.
It can penetrate steel and
withstand attack by strong
acids. It has a high melting
point, though when heated
enough it will go up in
flames and convert to car-
bon dioxide gas. In addi-
tion to its electrical and op-
tical properties, one of the
diamond's most important
properties is that it can be
brought to the hardest and
sharpest edge."
Long after the student's
project was completed, Pro-
fessor Yarnitsky was still
researching diamonds. He
soon became a leading
authority on the gems, and
his expertise is acknowl-
edged worldwide. He has
even carried out diamond-
related research for such in-
dustrial giants as RCA.
In the early days of his
research, Professor Yarnit-
sky also devoted time to
breaking down barriers
against new technology in
an industry that employed
methods based on centuries
of tradition and experience.
His success in this area is
exemplified by the estab-
lishment of the Israel Dia-
mond Institute, which is
funded by government and
industry and in turn pro-
vides financing for research.
"We introduced the idea
that something can be done
to improve the technology
