It is prac- ticed at Orthodox and some Conservative wed- dings. It may take place in the rabbi's study or in the bride's room. Generally, on- ly the immediate families, the maid of honor, and the best man attend. It is not clear why this ceremony was introduced into our tradition, but it may have had something to do with the fact that mar- riages were arranged, and the groom, having had lit- tle opportunity to see his wife-to-be before the wed- ding, wanted to make cer- tain that he was marrying the girl promised him.
