deed what the Ethiopian Jews
were doing. Thanks to the ef-
forts of Israel and the United
States, about 8,000 Ethiopian
Jews were brought to Israel in
the winter of 1984-1985. When
the final CIA airlift ended in
March, the long battle to save
this ancient people was
thought to be over. Today,

who remain in Ethiopia must
not be left to their fate, they
must also be brought to their
homeland where they too can
contribute to the building of
the State of Israel.
In the 1940s, people claimed
ignorance about the tragic fate
of European Jews; today, we
can no longer make that claim
with regard to Ethiopian Jews.
The Jews of Ethiopia yearn for
freedom. We must heed their
call.

All Super Sunday records
were broken Feb. 1. By the
close of the day, when the final
Allied Jewish Campaign
pledges were added to the tote
board, Super Sunday chairmen
Diane Klein and Michael
Maddin were able to announce
$885,423—funds that will
benefit thousands of Jews here
in Detroit and around the
world. The same 7,765 con-
tributors last year gave
$769,000.
It was an undertaking being
repeated in 150 communities
across America.
Throughout the day, 450
volunteers worked in four
shifts-160 of them in the
Jewish Welfare Federation
Young Adult Division, who fol-
lowed up their hard work with
dinner, music and a Super
Sundae bar.
The real message of the day
was brought home to workers
on the 2 p.m. shift when 25
young artists and their parents
arrived for the awarding of
prizes in the Jewish Welfare
Federation/Jewish Newsposter
contest.
In expressing their under-
standing of"We Are One:
.
Partners for Life," the children
had drawn what the workers
were conveying on the phone:
the sense of community that
binds Jews together, wherever
they live.
Jane Sherman, a briefer at
one of the compulsory half-
hour pre-phoning sessions, put
the day's importance another
way: "Unless we stay together
as a strong Jewish community,
we will not be able to guaran-
tee a strong community for our
children and grandchildren.
We are not asking for our-
selves, we are asking for future
generations."
It was a day for both the
young and the youthful at
heart. The youngest: Michael
Barg, age four months. Among
the older generation: Bernard
Luchtan, age 77.
Louis Freeman set a long-
distance record. When he dis-
covered the name of his golfing
partner among his pile of pros-
pects' cards, he called the man
in Boca Raton—and delivered
a $1,000 pledge fo the Cam-
paign.

apron with the legend, :`I'd
rather be fund raising," used
