To Our Readers If today's Jewish News seems easier to handle, with crisper reproduction, less ink ruboff and more color, then you've noticed the latest example of our commit- ment to publish a newspaper of high quality for you. You deserve it — for we are seeking to reflect a vibrant, impressive community. We have moved to a new printer, TAS Graphic Communications, Inc., and will be utilizing its high- quality presses and binding capabilities. But our improvements go beyond skin deep. To- day's Close-Up by Staff Writer David Holzel provides an informative, thorough look at Detroit's Israeli commu- nity and is an example of the quality local reporting to which we are dedicated. And our highly successful Single Life section, coordinated by Local News Editor Heidi Press, continues to tackle issues of concern to Jewish singles and of interest to our entire community. Additionally, we are again expanding our local news- gathering capabilities. Next week, we will initiate Up Front, a full page of major news stories, including a local, national and in- ternational roundup. And to keep you informed, you will receive our enjoyable, colorful in-paper Bridal sup- plement. We are confident you will find the improved Jewish News more interesting, informative and attractive than ever. We value your readership — and your comments — and look forward to continuing to serve you. Charles A. Buerger, Publisher Arthur M. I, too, was a recent visitor to Poland on a mission to docu- ment the Jewish people post- Hitler, why they remained and the quality'of their lives today. It was the most devastating experience of my life, but to say "don't visit Poland" (Op-Ed, Jan. 23) is a feeling I cannot disagree with more. The people that shared this experience with me both young and old were thrilled to visit with someone Jewish from the free world. They clung to the postcards from Israel, the new kippah that was the gentle- men's first in 40 years, the Hadassah magazines and the mezzuzahs I brought along. They hung on every word of in- formation concerning life in America and Israel and I as- sured them when I left that I would contact all of their rela- tives. It is imperative that our children and our grand- children never forget what oc- curred in Poland. They must return to the roots of our people to pay their respects to those who were less fortunate . . Maxine Kronick Flint Chaim Grade Review Welcomed I wish to take the opportu- nity to express my very special gratitude to Mr. Philip Slomovitz, editor emeritus, for his unique review of the newly translated classic of Chaim Grade, My Mother's Sabbath Days, and of my humble con- tribution towards its appear- ance in English (Purely Com- mentary, Dec. 19, 1986). I consider it a sacred duty to make sure that the treasures of Chaim Grade's literary legacy, which he left exclusively to my care, reach the good Anglo- American readers who may not know Yiddish. My work is a duty also towards the Yiddish literature, which can proudly claim one of the greatest mas- ters of world literature, and of course towards Chaim Grade himself .. . I know that Mr. Slomovitz, who write about us with so much understanding, is aware of Chaim Grade's merits as a human being, as an artist and a scholar, and I am so very grateful to him for having shared this knowledge with the readers of The Jewish News. Chaim Grade is not here any more, for which reason I shall thank Mr. Slomovitz with the great words of the bible: "Blessed be he of the Lord, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. . .
