`Soft Paintings'
To Be Exhibited

Caiman Shemi's "Soft Paint-
ings" will be on exhibit at the
main Jewish Community Cen-
ter, Feb. 15 - 25. A reception in
his honor will be held 1-5 p.m.
on Feb. 15.
The paintings are composed
of brightly colored collages of
fabrics which are put together
by a "non-sewing" machine at
Kibbutz Carmia in Israel, his
home for most of his adult life.
The process creates an illusion
of transparency similar to
watercolor or acrylic washes in
paintings on paper and canvas.
Shemi was born in Argen-
tina in 1939 and moved to Is-
rael at the age of 22 and joined
Kibbutz Carmia.
He continued his studies in
art, started in Argentina, and
was deeply influenced by Is-
raeli sculptor Rudi Lehman.
His main interest was sculpt-
ing and he worked with a
variety of materials, including
ceramics, wood and fiberglass.
In 1977, using scraps of
material discarded by the fac-
tory at the kibbutz, he began
experimenting with yet an-
other medium. He combined
his technical skills with his ar-
tistic vision and created "Soft
Paintings."
Shemi's works can seen in
many public buildings in Is-
rael. A Shemi work was pre-
sented to late Egyptian
President Anwar Sadat by Is-
raeli President Katzir and
President Cherchesko of
Romania owns a Shemi.
