form rabbis find the process
in conflict with the principle
that men and women should
have equal control over their
lives, which includes marriage
and divorce.
He also expressed qualms
about the idea of sanctions
against a recalcitrant hus-
band. Since Reform rabbis do
not at present require the get
as a prerequisite for re-
marriage, it is unfair to apply
sanctions to a husband in a
temple where the rabbi does
not consider the get nec-
essary, he said.
He said a prenuptial agree-
ment would solve the problem
for the future but leaves
unresolved the problem of
abandoned spouses now. Sim-
ilarly, it may reduce or
eliminate mamzerut in the
future "but it will not solve
the tragic dilemma for tens of
thousands of mamzerim who
already exist," Rosenthal
said.
The. Board of Rabbis voted
unanimously to appoint a
committee of Orthodox, Con-
servative and Reform rabbis
to study the proposals fur-
ther and to report back to a
plenary meeting with specific
suggestions for action.
Yeshivah
Students Held
Jerusalem (JTA) — Three
yeshivah students in the West
Bank were detained by police
last week for allegedly firing
rifles illegally in the Balata
refugee camp near Nablus.
They are Ben Zion Stern, Haim
Ben-Zion and Roman Aldoubi,
all students at the Od Yosef
Hai Yeshivah at Joseph's tomb
in Nablus.
They were driving to the
yeshivah when rocks were
hurled at their car. The three
left the car and chased the
rock-throwers into Balata.
Booklet Out
On Racism
New York — The American
Jewish Committee has issued a
booklet, arguing strongly that
affirmative-action goals and
timetables must and can be
used to overcome the nation's
legacy of racism and to enable
American blacks to gain true
equality of opportunity.
Titled "When to Count by
Race: Affirmative Action,
Quotas and Equal Opportu-
nity," the booklet also stresses
that "the attempt to fulfill
numerical goals must be corn-
bined with a strong emphasis
on fair, performance-related
testing when appropriate" and
that "the goals`timetables ap-
proach must be made explicitly
temporary."
