WI N TICKETS TO Jews Remain Liberal Voters 2 1711 V V IDEO liON1 737-0010 L New York — An analysis of Jewish voting behavior in the 1986 congressional and guber- natorial elections, according to a report by the American Jewish Committee, once again reveals a strong orientation toward liberal politics and the Democratic party. At the same time, substantial numbers of Jews appear willing to vote for moderate and even conserva- tive Republicans if they are perceived as supportive of basic Jewish concerns. Jewish women tend to be more liberal then Jewish men; unprosperous Jews more Democratic than prosperous Jews; and Orthodox Jews more conservative than Reform Jews, the report noted. What is exceptional about Jewish voting behavior in the United States, Dr. David Singer observed, is the "firm commitment to liberal politics" despite the relative affluence of American Jews. As a corollary of their politi- cal liberalism, Dr. Singer pointed out, American Jews tend to identify- strongly with the Democratic party, voting Democratic by an average of 25 percent more than the general electorate in every president- ial election since 1924. In the 1984 Reagan-Mondale race, between 67 and 70 percent of Jews cast their vote for Demo- crat Walter Mondale. Jewish loyalty to the Democratic party is even greater in congres- sional elections, Dr. Singer added. Full Service Club Next to MAPLE RD., JUST E. Terrorist Bomb On Bus Wounds Nine Jerusalem (JTA) — A bomb planted on a bus traveling from Haifa to Jerusalem rip- ped through the vehicle last Sunday, leaving nine persons wounded, one of them ser- iously. It was the worst at- tack on an Israeli bus since six persons were wounded last February . when a bomb exploded on a commuter bus in the 1b1 Aviv suburb of Bnei Brak. The explosive charge was probably placed on the bus before it left the Haifa central bus depot for its two-hour trip to Jerusalem. The driver, who was himself hurt in the explosion, insisted, however, that he had checked the bus before beginning the trip. Eyewitness reports said the charge seemed to have been placed under the driver's seat. He himself was thrown from his seat by the blast but he managed to guide the vehicle to a standstill without crashing into the highway dividers. There were 52 passengers on the bus. —Jim Hoberman, Village Voice THE UNTOLD STORY OF JEWISH RESISTANCE DURING WWII THE CIESLA FOUNDATION PRESENTS PARTISANS OF VILNA A RONALD K.
