A single parent for the past ten years, Sandra X. has struggled to raise two chil- dren without any financial or emotional support from her former spouse. That struggle has involved hold- ing two jobs at the same time, returning to school to make her skills more mar- ketable, moving her family back home with her par- ents, and still finding time to guide her children. She views the past years as a "quest for independence" and says that her education has been the key. Currently working in the field of vocational rehabili- tation guidance, Sandra is studying for a master's de- gree, which she says will double her income. "I want to be able to give my kids the basic necessities, as an intact family living on our own," she says. "Divorce has created a whole new kind of middle class poverty and I'm working to not be part of it." Sandra says that she has been helped to achieve her goals by the Hebrew Free Loan Association. Unable to pay the university's regis- tration fees at the begin- ning of each semester, she borrows the money from HFLA and then pays it back monthly. Now she's looking ahead to completing her de- gree next year, finding an apartment and celebrating her son's bar mitzvah. The agency. Based on the Torah prohibition against exacting interest from a fel- low Jew, Hebrew- Free Loan Association provides loans to those who can later repay it. The volunteer-run agency works in partner- ship with the Jewish Wel- fare Federation and a number of other communal agencies in reaching out to the Jewish community. Joint programs include as- sistance for students, youngsters at summer camp, and families buying homes in Oak Park and Southfield, as well as the more traditional types of loans. HFLA receives funding from the Allied Jewish Campaign of the Jewish Welfare Federation. The reports, submitted by Jewish groups, concern al- leged Nazi war criminals who immigrated to Australia after World War II. "We will under- take whatever steps are necessary," Hawke told reporters. The Australian leader is on a three-day visit to Israel, the first ever by a Prime Minister of Australia. He arrived from Jordan where he had meet- ings with King Hussein. At a dinner in his honor at the Knesset, Hawke called for Palestinian self-determina- tion. However, he said he had the impression from his visit to Jordan that a Jordanian- Palestinian confederation was a widely supported solution to the Palestinian problem. Nevertheless, Hawke, who heads a Labourite govern- ment, is regarded as a staunch friend of Israel.
