Brief Supports
Cross Removal

New York — In an amicus,
or friend-of-the-court, brief
submitted on behalf of itself
and the Jewish Federation of
Hawaii, the American Jewish
Congress argued that a group
of 15 civilian taxpayers are
entirely within their rights in
requesting that the United
States District Court for the
District of Hawaii order the
U.S. Marine Corps to remove a
65 foot-high lighted cross from
public display on a hillside at
Camp Holland M. Smith, out-
side of Honolulu.
Earlier this year, the Navy's
Judge Advocate General, its
chief legal officer, ruled that
the presence of the cross on the
base violated church-state
separation. The base comman-
der, Col. Gene Castagnetti, or-
dered the symbol removed. But
he was reversed by the Marine
Corps commandant, Gen. Paul
X. Kelley.
The 15 civilian plaintiffs, in-
cluding seven Christians, two
Buddhists, four Jews, a Unita-
rian and a Quaker, brought
suit in the U.S. District Court,
contending that the mainte-
nance of the cross on military
property "symbolized gov-
ernmental approval, sponsor-
ship, preference and endorse-
ment of a specific religion."
They also asserted that the
display "demeans, trivializes
and attempts to secularize a
profoundly religious symbol."

FBI Arrests
Arab Militants

New York (JTA) — Seven
members of the Popular
Front for the Liberation of
Palestine terrorist group were
arrested last week in Los
Angeles by the Federal
Bureau of Investigation
(FBI).
The suspects were iden-
tified as six Jordanian and a
Kenyan. The FBI said that
one of the arrested was
Khader Musa Hanaide, the
Southern California leader of
the group. They were arrested
on immigration charges.
The Popular Front, which is
led from Damascus by Dr.
George Habash, has been
advocating and endorsing
terrorism and violence as a
way to solve the Palestinian
question. The group is known
for its opposition to the
Palestine Liberation Organ-
ization (PLO) and its leader
Yasir Arafat.
A spokesman for the FBI
in Los Angeles said Monday
that all the seven suspects are
now subject to deportation
from the United States based
on allege violations of their
visas.
