Students will hear classroom
sessions on ethnicity and
ethnic differences, and
teachers will utilize local news
events to heighten student
awareness. The overall project,
entitled "World of Difference,"
will also sponsor poster and
essay contests for the students.
The Skillman Foundation is
providing $90,000 of the
$234,000 cost of the educa-
tional component. ADL is seek-
ing other funding sources for
the remainder. They will fund
teacher training sessions be-
ginning in April, with the
hopes of having a "master
teacher" in every school build-
ing by next September.
At the same time, WDIV and
the Free Press have committed
to series of news and feature
stories, editorials, documen-
taries and public service ad-
vertisements on the "World of
Difference" theme.
WDIV will produce and air
three to five "prejudice reduc-
tion" advertisements every
day in prime time throughout
the year. The Free Press com-
mitment includes Sunday
magazine supplements and
study guides. WDIV will also
produce a four-part situation
comedy based on a black couple
in Hamtramck and a white
couple in West Bloomfield. A
children's series will focus on
kids of different origins par-
ticipating in a karate class.

The local ADL has been
planning the project for a year,
and came close to putting to-
gether a media consortium
that included both major De-
troit newspapers and the three
major television stations.
WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) backed
out of the consortium, and Lo-
benthal expressed displeasure
that Channel 7 and WJBK-TV
(Channel 2) began running
their own series on prejudice
several days before yesterday's
press conference.
But other groups have joined
in the project. It has been sup-
ported by the NAACP and the
Detroit Urban League, the
American Jewish Friendship
League, the Detroit American
Indian Center, the Chaldean
American Federation, Ameri-
can Citizens for Justice, as well
as school, religious and union
groups throughout the city.
To help foster the program,
ADL has recruited many of
these organizations into a Civil
Rights Task Force of Met-
ropolitan Detroit, chaired by
Jim Shimoura. World of Dif-
ference committee chairs are
David Wallace and Fran Gross
Linden. Educational Task
Force chairs are Nancy Schon-
berg, Ann Kuffler, Sheri Schiff
and Deena Lockman.
Local ADL officials denied
that any particular problems
in the Detroit area led to their
sponsorship of World of Dif-
ference. However, the program
is being tailored to local prob-
