THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Vandals hit the Yeshivath Beth Yehudah in April.
Anti-Semitic Incidents
Jumped In Michigan
ALAN HITSKY
Special to The Jewish. News
M
ichigan saw nearly a
three-fold increase
in anti-Semitic van-
dalism in 1986 over the prev-
ious year. Although the overall
numbers are still relatively
low — 35 incidents in 1986
compared to 14 in 1985 —
Richard Lobenthal of the
Anti-Defamation League of
B'nai B'rith is deeply con-
cerned by the report.
The figures, made public last
week as part of the national
ADL's annual "Audit of Anti-
Semitic Incidents," showed a
national drop in 1986 of seven
percent. Nationally, acts of
vandalism, bombings and
arson against Jews dropped
from 638 in 1985 to 594 in
1986. Ominously, Michigan
had one of two bombing at-
tempts and one of seven arsons.
Michigan's incidents in-
cluded a crude bomb found at
the Jewish Community Center
in West Bloomfield last July,
and a previously unpublicized
arson attempt at Cong. B'nai
David in Southfield last
January. At B'nai David,
someone broke a window to
gain entry to the synagogue
and planted a gasoline bomb.
The bomb failed to ignite.
Other reported incidents in-
cluded the destruction of the
succah at Hillel Day School,
vandalism at Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah, incidents at Cong.
Beth Shalom and the Bir-
mingham Temple, and a bomb
threat against a synagogue on
Kol Nidrei.
"There has been an extraor-
dinary increase in violence
against all minority groups,"
said Richard Lobenthal, direc-
tor of ADL's Michigan region.
He said local and national
police and human rights agen-
cies have reported increases in
acts against blacks, Arabs,
gays and others. "It is distres-
sing," said Lobenthal, "to see
violence against Jews, but in
the larger context it is not a
surprise."
Lobenthal said even dis-
counting "serial incidents" —
eight vandalism reports in
West Bloomfield Lake Estates
and Wabeek which were prob-
ably done by the same indi-
vidual or two individuals —
Michigan's 35 incidents still
represented a major increase.
"There seems to be a weaken-
ing of the social prohibitions
against acting out hostilities
against minorities," he said,
blaming most acts of anti-
Semitism on teenagers. "Most
graffiti-daubers are 14-to-18
years old."
ADL's Michigan Region
board last week decided to in-
crease the activities of its secu-
rity committee. The group
serves as a liaison to police
agencies and Jewish organiza-
tions, and provides staff and
volunteer training, on-site au-
dits of buildings and security
conferences.
Nationally, the ADL audit
reported that assaults,
harassment and threats
against Jewish individuals
were virtually the same in
1986 — 312 incidents reported
vs. 306 in 1985. One of the inci-
dents, however, resulted in the
death of a Chassidic man in
New York. ADL officials were
"troubled" by an increase in
anti-Semitic incidents on col-
lege campuses — up from 12 in
1985 to 19 in 1986.
New York state led the na-
tion in anti-Semitic vandalism
incidents with 186, followed by
Florida (79), California (62),
and New Jersey (48). The na-
tion has been experiencing a
gradual reduction in the
number of incidents for the
past six years, from 974 in 1981
to 594 in 1986.
There have been 300-350
harassment cases nationally
for the last four years. Michi-
gan reported eight in 1985, but
dropped to two reported cases
in 1986.
