mutual recognition. Israel has
much to gain by entering into
negotiations with the PLO. If
such negotiations show them
to be still committed to the re-
jectionist provisions of their
covenant, the world would see
that it is the Palestinians who
stand in the way of peace.
Neither the Israeli peace
movement nor its supporters in
the U.S. support peace on such
terms.
However, if negotiations
show that the objectionable
provisions of the covenant are
no longer operative and that
the Palestinians are finally
willing to make peace with the
Jewish State, then Israel could
finally be freed from the state
of continual conflict and
periodic war which poses the
greatest threat to its continued
existence.

vulgar and degrading —
hardly a proper image for our
people.
