Batya and Esther Brod- man, age 1. It was touch- and-go in November 1985 for Batya and Esther Brodman. The twin daughters of Jeffrey and Michelle Brodman of Oak Park were born four months prematurely at Sinai Hospital; each weighed in at a tiny 11/2 pounds. With se- vere breathing problems and other complications, the babies were treated at Sinai's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for nearly five months before coming home. It was a difficult time for the family. Older sister De- na's birth at Sinai the prev- ious year had been a positive experience. Mrs. Brodman says that the care, kosher meals and "Jewish atmos- phere" all had been "a defi- nite plus." But the twins' birth was a much different situation. Mrs. Brodman says that the doctors and nurses were wonderful. "The level of care was excellent; but more than that, they taught us to take one step at a time, that you take two steps forward and one step back in cases like this." Batya and Esther will have some catching up to do in terms of size, but they're get- ting stronger and more feisty every day. And their dad simply calls it "a miracle." The agency. The only hos- pital founded under Jewish auspices in Michigan, Sinai Hospital of Detroit is a major patient care and teaching facility. Together with Shiffman Clinic, which offers outpatient care with adjusted fees, and suburban health care centers, Sinai reaches over 50,000 patients a year.
