1987 PASSOVER RECIPE GUIDE.

BIRMINGHAM
FLINT

The following profile by the
Jewish Welfare Federation is
part of a series on the people
who benefit from the Allied
Jewish Campaign.
Batya and Esther Brod-
man, age 1. It was touch-
and-go in November 1985 for
Batya and Esther Brodman.
The twin daughters of Jeffrey
and Michelle Brodman of
Oak Park were born four
months prematurely at Sinai
Hospital; each weighed in at
a tiny 11/2 pounds. With se-
vere breathing problems and
other complications, the
babies were treated at Sinai's
Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit (NICU) for nearly five
months before coming home.
It was a difficult time for
the family. Older sister De-
na's birth at Sinai the prev-
ious year had been a positive
experience. Mrs. Brodman
says that the care, kosher
meals and "Jewish atmos-
phere" all had been "a defi-
nite plus." But the twins'
birth was a much different
situation. Mrs. Brodman says
that the doctors and nurses

were wonderful. "The level of
care was excellent; but more
than that, they taught us to
take one step at a time, that
you take two steps forward
and one step back in cases
like this."

Batya and Esther will have
some catching up to do in
terms of size, but they're get-
ting stronger and more feisty
every day. And their dad
simply calls it "a miracle."

The agency. The only hos-
pital founded under Jewish
auspices in Michigan, Sinai
Hospital of Detroit is a major
patient care and teaching
facility. Together with
Shiffman Clinic, which offers
outpatient care with adjusted
fees, and suburban health
care centers, Sinai reaches
over 50,000 patients a year.
The NICU, which treated 450
premature and ill babies last
year, is part of the Mother's
and Infant's Center, which
includes a regional center for
women with serious problems
during pregnancy.
