flict, they were busted and
spanked."
"A little rebellion is good for
the soul," says Magid, one of
three Jewish members of the
13-year-old troupe, the Flying
Karamazov Brothers.
"It's important not to accept
everything" handed one's way,
he says. "That's part of the
Jewish teaching."
Indeed, this Karamazov's
heritage stems not from Russia
as much as it does from Istan-
bul, where his zayda was born.
"A lot of my philosophy
comes from my grandfather,"
he says. "He was a Sephardic
longshoreman when he came
to this country — a real
revolution-type person. But
then again, rebellion is a real
Jewish idea — look at the Mac-
cabees, look at Israel before it
became a state."
Let's take a look at the
Brothers' new program, "Jug-
gle and Hyde, A Play With
Words." Oh, those kidders.
"This program is different
from last year's. But we've kept
the bit where we juggle three
different objects at one time
tossed our way by the audi-
ence. We kept it because it's
different every night and
people would bring things
anyway and, boy, would they
get upset if we didn't do it."
Upset their audience? No
way, says Magid, who claims
the new program "is full of
funny stuff." Like? "Like 'Sur-
fis Are Forever,' " a bit "from
the 20 Cents Fox film, Jews of
Denial."
"That's a takeoff of our own
experience in making the film
Jewel of the Nile, says Magid of
the group's only film credit.
The Brothers have matured
a bit over the years without los-
ing their wackiness. "We are
into responsible anarchy," says
Magid.
Years ago, as a kid growing
up in Seattle, Magid never im-
agined he would one day be at
the forefront of the "New Vau-
devillian" movement.
"I never thought I'd be in
theater," he says. "I thought I'd
be a doctor like my father." In-
stead, he now needles his four
"brothers" — Smerdyakov
(Sam Williams), Ivan (Howard
Jay Patterson), Alyosha
(Randy Nelson) and Fyodor
(Timothy Daniel Furst) — on
stage.
What keeps this Jewish jug-
gler grounded in life? His
Judaism, he says — and fish-
ing.
"Attending shul on Satur-
days — I still go to a Sephardic
Orthodox shul — kept me cen-
tered, as has fishing," which
kept him toeing the line.
That's fine for Paul David
Magid. But what about his
alter ego, Dmitri Karamazov,
who, in his own bio, says his
desire in life is "to meet my
creator — and ask for a raise."
"What would I tell him if we
met?" says David. "I'd tell him
to stop pushing so hard, to
enjoy himself."
And maybe attend a per-
formance of his own troupe.
