RODNICK BROS. NIBBLES & NUTS FRUIT & GIFT BASKETS Welfare Federation benefici- ary will suffer. Who wants the task of deciding whether we cut back services to the aged or reduce funding to day schools? Detroit is a very special community, renowned throughout the country for its generosity. During the severe recession in 1982-83, a lot of people were hurting. And yet, they saw their responsibilities to those less fortunate. Actually, giving — or doing justly, as tzedaka is translated — is more than a responsibil- ity. It is a privilege. For some of us, survivors of the Holocaust, this privilege is made all the sweeter by our good fortune to live in freedom. On a mission to Poland last year, we wept for the millions of souls lost to us — genera- tions of artists and writers, of scholars and scientists. But we also wept for a generation who had created magnificent agen- cies and institutions of caring and creativity. They wrote a chapter in Jewish history that was without parallel. But when we left the shadows of Poland and re- turned to the sunlight of Israel and America, we realized that our history is far from over. On desert settlements, we found new hope for starving nations. In once run-down Project Re- newal neighborhoods, we found a model for urban re- newal that is the envy of other, far wealthier countries. Here . at home, we found the vision and sense of commitment to realize a better Jewish future. Nevertheless, the concern is there: a decline ,in the number of contributors could affect the services we have traditionally provided here at home and the assistance we have rendered to our people overseas. What does this mean to each of us? First, it means we must think about our individual commitment to the Campaign. Are we really giving to the best of our ability? Are we setting an example of philanthropy for our children to assure the fu- ture of our community and its institutions? Second, it means we must lo- cate new contributors. Can we honestly say all of our rela- tives, friends, neighbors and co-workers are doing their share? Without their support of the Campaign, our commu- nity cannot maintain its lead- ership of American Jewry nor fulfill its obligation to the Jewish People. Let the Cam- paign New Gifts Department know there are some people you'd like to include in this community obligation. At this turning point in Jewish history, each of us is asked to help write the next chapter. Each of us has the power to affect its outcome. Please join us in support of the 1987 Allied Jewish Cam- paign, for we are one . . . partners for life. Delivery Available Happiness Is . . . As a long time subscriber to The Jewish News and a member of the Jewish commu- nity, I don't know what your headline means, as I don't know the community is enflamed with the menorah, except the ACLU, which has not said much this past Chanukah. I will give you some informa- tion that you may not be aware of about this past Chanukah. The Grand Rapids Press edito- rially approved the menorah at the Calder Plaza, and all let- ters to the editor were in favor of the menorah. When the Press asked the two rabbis of the community to comment, they did not. Of the 1,600 Jews of the community, there are many who approve the menorah, and why your article stated that they all were against, I'll never know, but I'm sure there is an explana- tion. If I were living in Detroit, I would have believed your arti- cle, but that I don't, I will not 356-4282 4 11.***40,..-ma.mt.-/ft:4/-tftvAlfts4tow40,..-*Ait..lita.w. believe it, and I feel someone should give an explanation to your readers. 1 Lewis Turetsky Grand Rapids Conflicting Policy On Child Care Your recent article, "Who's Taking Care of Our Children?" (Jan. 9) touched on a situation critical to many families. While many children are cared for in day care centers, nearly half of all children in care for ten hours per week or more are cared for in private day care homes. Several Detroit metro com- munities have zoning or other ordinances which outlaw the use of private residences for this purpose (even if the home is state licensed). Parents to Legalize In-Home Child Care has been organized to address this present crisis. Presently, our attention is fo- cused in Farmington Hills where the apparent prohibi- tion of home based child care is in conflict with the needs of Continued on next page Orchard Lake Road /, Mile North of Maple West Bloomfield A GIANT SCREEN SONY AT GIANT SAVINGS!
