Poland might affect the Vati-
can's next move in the Mideast.
The Polish Church was ex-
periencing its most severe re-
pression since the advent of the
Communist regime. Cardinals
from France, Poland and the
>- Netherlands, said insiders, fa-
vored a tilt toward Israel to
show the Soviets that Rome
still had clout to use to
negotiate its own agenda.
But during the '80s this fac-

tion failed to gather mucji
momentum and by the time
• Cardinal O'Connor flew to Is-
rael, Catholics sympathetic to
Israel were cautioning that an
alteration of Rome's position
was becoming increasingly un-
likely.
"People tend to forget that
), there are Palestinian
Catholics, and that they are
represented directly inside the
Vatican," points out Father
Pawlikowski. "There is no
Jewish equivalent."
Indeed, though the Pope has
hugged and kissed Yasir
Arafat, the Supreme Pontiff
\ has not visited Israel. If de-
• layed much longer, experts be-
lieve, such a trip will probably
not materialize. The Mideast
will not get quieter than it has
been during the years since Is-
rael's withdrawal from Leba-
non.
Meanwhile, the Pope has
been given the right to visit Po-
land, diminishing the argu-
ment of the Vatican's pro-
Israel elements who were
using the Poland issue as a
> wedge. If the Pope visits Israel
in the future, he is going to do
so because he wants to, not be-
cause it is politically expe-
> client.
The chances of this are re-
mote after the O'Connor deba-
cle, and this is what prompted
Jewish groups to cry foul. If the
Vatican is reemphasizing that
it has no intention of budging
from the status quo, then
chances are there will be no
change in Israeli-Vatican rela-
tions, now and for many years
\ to come.
The Vatican will continue to

not recognize nations in a state
/— of belligerency, including Jor-
dan, and it will continue to
push for the establishment of a
Palestinian homeland.
