"We now know that 40 years ago an investigation into Wal- dheim's Nazi record was launched and then suddenly terminated under the most suspicious circumstances," said WJC Vice President Kal- man Sultanik. "The world is owed an explanation." WJC reported Jan. 23 that it has obtained Vienna Superior Court documents that show Austria's De-Nazification Commission never completed a review of Waldheim's case in 1946, shortly after he began his law career. The de-Nazification proce- dure was required by Allied oc- cupation authorities for indi- viduals with suspected Nazi backgrounds seeking positions within the judiciary. Wal- dheim had signed a personnel statement in late 1945 that indicated he had been a member of the pre-war Nazi Cavalry Corps, WJC reported. On April 1, 1946, his case came before the commission, which filed an application for a find- ing that no charges existed against him. But no finding was made, ac- cording to records cited by WJC, because the application was "withdrawn" on June 29, 1946 "in view of (Waldheim's) acceptance by the foreign serv- ice" as personal secretary to the foreign minister. Flexible Election Dates Supported New York (JTA) — The Los Angeles City Council has taken the first step in making the dates of municipal elec- tions more flexible, in large part to accommodate tens of - thousands of local Jews. Led by Agudath Israel of America, at least a half dozen Jews reportedly had com- plained in recent weeks that their religious beliefs pre- cluded them from voting in the upcoming April 14 primary election, which coincides with the first day of Passover. Jewish community leaders es- timated that 75,000 Jewish voters would be affected. Jewish defense and commu- nity relations agencies took no formal position on the issue, according to Michael Hirschfeld of the Community Relations Council of the Jewish Community Federa- tion of Greater Los Angeles. \.= Nevertheless, the city coun- cil voted 12-0 in favor of city council charter and elections committee Chairman Hal Bernson's resolution to amend the city charter to allow the council to move municipal elections either a week forward or back if the original election dates are "in conflict with a legal or religious holiday or other significant special events Such as Easter vacation."
