Kimche insisted, "We did
• what we could to help create
direct contact between the
United States and Iran,
which is what we were asked
to do. We also did our best to
bring about the release of the
American hostages. . . . Israel
\— only acted in the Iranian af-
r —fair in order to help an ally.
We entered in good will, in
I good faith, with a feeling that
> this is what we have to do in
response to an ally.
"We have a clear con-
science," he assured. "And
when I say we, I'm talking
• about myself personally and
about my political mentors. I
know that what we did was
/- within
. the framework of the
alliance and friendship we
have with the United States.
Everything else as far as I'm
concerned, is ridiculous."

Koch Visits
Auschwitz

Bonn (JTA) — Mayor Ed-
ward Koch of New York visited
Il the site of the Auschwitz-
Birkenau death camps in Po-
land last Sunday to pay tribute
to the four million who died
there in the Nazi effort to ex-
terminate the Jewish people,
among them members of his
own family.
Koch, American-born, is the
son of Polish Jews who immig-
rated to the United States. As
he toured the Holocaust ex-
hibit at the camp site he wept
copiously and had few words.
Later he reached out to touch
a wall where inmates were
shot. It is called the "Wall of
Death." Koch kissed his fin-
gers which touched the stone.
- "I wanted to make contact with
every Jew and every Christian
who was killed at that wall" he
told reporters.

Lurnpi Dead
At 114

Melbourne (JTA) — Lumpi,
_ the canine ward of the Jewish
National Fund in Australia
and a local Jewish media
celebrity, has died at age 14 of
a snake bite.
Lumpi's owner, the late
Berta Irom, had left her estate
to JNF four years ago except
for $10,000 to take care of
Lumpi. The dog moved into a
canine old age home, where he
became a staff favorite, accord-
ing to the Australian Jewish
News. Lumpi frequently re-
ceived JNF officials, occasion-
ally for photo opportunities for
the Jewish press. The remain-
der of Lumpi's trust fund will
be turned over to JNF.
