presumably the angels sort
them out. A more realistic
commentator ventures the
thought that they simply dis-
integrate into pulp under the
influence of the weather. Are
they removed by the sanitation
department and taken to the
city dump?
David Oren, writing in
Haaretz, interviewed Rabbi
Meir Yehuda Gerz, religious
caretaker of the Wall, and ob-
tained his authoritative reply.
Twice a year, on the eve of
Passover and on the eve of
Rosh Hashanah, when tens of
thousands of new messages
and prayers are to be expected,
the Wall is carefully cleaned
out of all the scraps which have
accumulated. They are re-
spectfully and delicately
placed in large bags. They are
handled carefully, receiving
the same treatment as tattered
old prayer books and damaged
Torah scrolls, for these, too,
usually bear the name of God.
At dead of night, twice a year,
the sacks are carried off to a
special cave in the cemetery on
the Mount of Olives, and there
receive a dignified burial. On
the morrow, new memos, jot-
tings and scraps of paper find
their way into the crevices of
the Wall.
The burial cave on the
Mount of Olives might some
day be regarded by the histo-
rians of the future as a massive
Genizah, an enormous repos-
itory of the little documents
which will reflect the hopes
and fears, entreaties and wor-
ries and day-to-day concerns of
our civilization.
Lawyer To Plead
For Drug Dealer
• Jerusalem (JTA) — An Is-
raeli lawyer is appealing to
President Hosni Mubarak of
Egypt to grant clemency to an
Israeli, Yosef Tahan, who was
sentenced to death in Cairo
last year for allegedly smuggl-
ing drugs into Egypt.
Tahan's attorney, Zvi
Lidsky, said he would hand the
appeal over to the Egyptian
embassy in Tel Aviv Sunday
and go to Cairo himself if
necessary to try to see
Mubarak. He said his appeal is
based on humanitarian
grounds. Tahan, a resident of
Ashdod, is the father of four
children. A letter from them
will accompany the appeal.
According to reports from
Cairo, Mubarak is not expected
to approve Tahan's execution
nor will he grant a pardon.
This could leave the man in
prison for years with the death
penalty hanging over him.
Tahan was arrested at the
Cairo airport in August 1985
with 1.35 kilos of heroin. He
was on his way home to Israel
from India.
At his trial, he said he in-
tended to market the drugs in
Israel.
