Judge Moiseev, 36, who is active in a variety of Jewish communal and bar association > activities adds that it is not enough just to join and be active in groups. People have to know you're interested in being introduced. "If people don't know you're available, they don't think to suggest somebody. You've got ;=to let people know that (you're available). Judge Moiseev takes a bal- anced look at being single. She has found advantages and dis- advantages. ) "It was an advantage, I think, in some ways during the (last election) campaign be- cause I didn't have to worry about other people too much. I could be out every night at campaign events and I didn't have to worry that I was short changing someone else. And it \_ was a drawback during the /--) campaign. Some people tended not to think that a single per- ? son could be a judge." Overall, she accepts her L singlehood as a fact of life. "I don't really think about it. It's just a fact of my life. I'm a judge, I'm a lawyer, I'm a single, I'm a daughter, I'm a sister. It's just another part of my life." Nonetheless, she is still an advocate for single people, and she sees that as one of her con- tributions to the Jewish com- munity. "I think there's a problem in the Jewish community finding a place for single people. I know too many things are couple-oriented and not enough just people-oriented. I'm not saying they have to be singles-oriented either, but you shouldn't feel uncomforta- ble because you didn't bring a spouse." Judge Moiseev was elected last November after having been appointed to the court in May 1986 by Gov. James Blanchard. Prior to her appointment she was chief counsel for the Civil Division of the Legal Aid and Defender Association. Before that, she practiced law for nine years. A graduate of the University of Michigan and the Univer- sity of Detroit Law School, Judge Moiseev spends her free time going to movies, reading and exercising. Although her job is demanding, she still has time to travel. She is a participant in the Wexner Heritage Foundation leadership program with 16 other specially-selected Jewish Detroiters in addition to her other Jewish community ac- tivities: executive committee of the Jewish Community Council, program chairman of the Federation Women's Di- vision's Business and Profes- sional Division, a member of the steering committee of the Federation Breakfast Club, a member of the Business and Professional Branch of Na- tional Council of Jewish Women, a member of Jewish Family Service, the Jewish Community Center, Cong. Beth Shalom, and is involved in efforts to benefit the Jewish Association for Retarded Citi- zens. This past week she was hon- ored by the B'nai B'rith Barris- ters Unit on the occasion of her election to the bench. She advises other singles to be happy just as they are, to take life one day at a time. "There's no sense in being miserable just because you're single. There are some advan- tages. I did divorce work for a long time in my practice and there were times I didn't regret for a moment not having some of the problems my clients had. "I think you really have to live each day and not think about what might have been." ❑ featuring: Music of Phil Marcus Esser Magic and Comedy of Hobson Ron Coden time & place: Tuesday, January 27, 8:00 p.m. (seating starts at 7:15 p.m.) Comedy Crossing, 23055 Telegraph Southfield, MI (phone 353-3798) Tickets may be purchased at the door for $6.00** **proceeds donated to the Wayne State University United Jewish Appeal Campaign 1987 Machon L'torah The Jewish Learning Network of Michigan invites you to join our Basic Judaic aucational Program I TOPIC: MONDAY EVENINGS TALMUD: THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE TO THE HUMAN MIND.
