LOCAL NEWS Ellias Named For Honor Dr. Sydney Ellias part of the Michigan Health Care Corp. Dr. Ellias has been associ- ated with both MOMC and MHCC for more than 40 years and has served as chairman of the board of trustees of both organizations. In addition to his service with MOMC and MHCC, he served as chairman of the de- partment of internal medicine at Art Center, Zieger and De- troit Osteopathic hospitals. He was also chief of staff at Art Center Hospital, a member of the board of governors of the American College of Osteo- pathic Internists and president of the Interstate Cardiac Society. Dr. Sydney F. Ellias and his wife, Helen, will be honored today with the dedication of the Sydney and Helen Ellias Pavillion in the Michigan Os- teopathic Medical Center. The pavillion is located at 5425 Woodward, Detroit, at the original site of the Art Cen- ter Hospital which Dr. Ellias was instrumental in establish- ing in the early 1940s. The hospital merged with Zieger Osteopathic Hospital to form the medical center which is Dr. Ellias was named Physi- cian of the Year at Art Center Hospital in 1975 and was the only recipient of the Distin- guished Service Award from the American College of Oste- opathic Internists in 1983. In addition to his private practice and many professional affiliations, Dr. Ellias served as clinical professor to externs from Kirksville College of Os- teopathic Medicine and was active in resident training for more than 35 years. Senior Volunteer Named To Nutrition Council The senior adult department of the Jewish Community Cen- ter, Jimmy Prentis Morris Branch, announces that senior volunteer Harry Shiovitz has been elected president of the Oakland-Livingston Human Service Agency's Nutrition Program Council. Shiovitz is a volunteer at the JPM's kosher nutrition site, which services meals to 400 senior adults weekly. He is president of the Senior Adult Council. S. Daniel Levit, a Russian- speaking attorney, will be available for legal consultation to the Russian community at 8 a.m. Mondays in room 3 of the JPM. For an appointment, call Judy Blustein, 967-4030. A dance presentation, "The Roaring '20s," choreographed and directed by Harriet Berg, will be presented at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Jaffe Hall of the JPM. There is a charge. Phyllis Rochen, senior adult librarian, will review Lifelines by Joseph Viertel at 11 a.m. Tuesday in room 4 of the JPM. Charles Driker will read short stories in Yiddish at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the JPM library. At 1 p.m. Tuesday, Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg of Cong. Bais Chabad of West Bloom- field will speak on "Jewish History through the Eyes of the Torah" in the JPM assem- bly hall. Anna Mickel will answer questions about Medicare at 10 a.m. Feb. 2 in the senior room at the main Jewish Center. The program is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the senior adult department as a public service. Rabbi Efry Spectre of Adat Shalom Synagogue will ad- dress the senior adults on "Conservative Judaism on Its 100th birthday. — What Does the Next Century Hold?" at 1 p.m. Feb. 2 in room 239 at the main Jewish Center.
