HO The Pierce Street Gallery will show the photographs of Tomasz Tomaszewski Satur- day through March 7. The im- ages in the exhibition resulted in his book, Remnants: The Last Jews of Poland. A non-Jew born in Poland, Tomaszewski had heard of the Jewish culture that flourished in Poland prior to 1939. From 1980 to 1985 he, and his jour- nalist wife, Malgorzata, com- bed Poland to find the rem- nants, the survivors of this his- torical period. Only 5,000 remain from a community of more than three million. The couple talked to Jews, usually the last in the cities and villages, throughout Po- land. They documented their daily life, family and religious occasions and cultural and so- cial events. They took more than 7,000 photographs. There will be a reception to meet the artist on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Tomaszewski will speak about his experi- ences and will be available to sign copies of his book. The Pierce Street Gallery is located at 217 Pierce, (2nd floor), Birmingham. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information, the gallery, 646-6950. (
