THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

looks like a little chalet build-
ing . . . a valet comes from
across the street to take your
car and park it within private
confines.
When opening the door at
Mario's on Second Blvd.,
there's a treat in store for mul-
titudes of dining fans who con-
sider it among the finest pro-
viders of north Italian fare.
After walking through a
lounge with well-appointed
bar, about 12 high stools and
seating for about 40 . . . you
then go into a large, airy din-
ing room replete with walnut,
oak, linen table cloths and
napkins and choice paintings
in a quietly ornate setting.
This is when owner Frank
Passalacqua greets you with
his friendly and gracious apti-
tude that is a big favorite
among film and stage stars,
sports figures, politicians, local
personalities and numerous
customers who claim Mario's
as their very own.
The main dining room looks
larger, but seating is just for
120 . . . Perhaps the reason is to
have more than ample space
for Mario's fine tuxedoed wait-
ers to gracefully ply their trade
with adept know-how.
Little lights sparkle all
about the dining room ledges
. . . as customers never know
who they'll come across at
Mario's . . . from friends to
celebrities.
Frank took over Mario's on
Oct. 18, 1980 . . . with the noted
canopy outside and national
reputation for northern Italian
food at it's finest . . . and has
now become known as "The
Heart Beat of Detroit."
Mario's is open seven days a
week . . . and we were there re-
cently on a Friday evening .. .
On this night it is the only
place in Detroit presenting
Dino Valle's International
Opera Theatre.
This is Dino's third year .. .
At the Mario's piano is Judith
Johnson, who three years ago
entered the Guiness Book of
Records by playing the
keyboard 134 consecutive
hours at Mario's . . . Gina
D'Elessia, soprano, is working
toward her master's degree in
music at Wayne State Univer-
sity . . . She also plays piano at
Mario's during lunch . . . Fiery
Christina Lypecky, mezzo sop-
rano, roams about the tables
giving her all . . . Gina's father,
Gino D'Elessia, who came to
play mandolin and stroll with
his violin, used to be known as
"Gino And His Magic Violin"
while at The Benchmark in
Michigan Inn a few years back
• .. Dino is on WCAR Radio
daily, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a
variety show, and 8 p.m. to 9
p.m. on Sundays with opera
music . . . He is a 14-year vete-
ran at WCAR.
Dino sang in Yiddish and
English as he did while per-
forming at the Concord Hotel
in New York's Catskill Moun-
tains in 1969 . . . the troupe
presented a varied and ver-

Frank Passalacqua

satile program . . . including
his "Where Shall I Go?" song of
Israel, their "Hava Nagela"
and a bevy of opera, operetta
and showtunes that gave the
almost full house a splendid
performance . . . including
Dino's "My Way."
Our table of everyday diners
Marilyn and Sid Frumkin, and
my wife Frieda, enjoyed a won-
derful dining experience .. .
Fine waiter Mark Pautuk
brought us the excellent
Mario's antipasto . . . soft but
firm tortellinis in chicken
broth . . . and for Marilyn, "The
best minestrone soup I've ever
had."
Frieda and Marilyn
thoroughly savored the very
fine Mario's Dover sole
meuniere . . . Sid enjoyed every
piece of his veal Colombo .. .
and when I finished my dish of
linguini with clam sauce there
wasn't enough left to feed a ro-
bin.
At another table, Pauline
and Herman Canner were
enjoying their veal Marsala
and boneless breast of chicken
. . . Irma and Dr. George Mogill
savored their veal piccante and
chicken cacciatore . . . while
raving about Mario's excellent
minestrone, pasta, the gener-
ous portions, superb service
and wonderful music.
Dave and Nettie Rosin are
Mario's regulars for many
years . . . Dave had veal Mario
and Nettie, as always, the juicy
and tender fillet mignon .. .
Dave still owns and operates
the Third Avenue Hardware
between Brainard and Seldon
. . . It's been there since 1948.
Mario's all told seats 450
people ... Florentine banquet
room 80 to 100, Mural Room for
small parties 50 to 60, and
Walnut banquet room with its
seating for 120.
Reason why Mario's linens
are always so fresh and clean
. . . changed constantly . . . is
because Frank has his own
laundry on the premises .. .
This always makes for an
added attraction in dining out.
Mario's is open Mondays
through Fridays 11:30 a.m. to
11 p.m. . . . Saturdays 4 p.m. to
