Jerusalem (JTA) — tension
ran high in Jerusalem follow-
ing the stabbing of two
Jewish youths in an Old City
bazaar last Saturday. The vic-
tims, Avi Ohayon, 24 and his
brother, Shalom, 17, were
reported in satisfactory con-
dition after undergoing
surgery.
The incident brought to
eight the number of Jews
stabbed by Arab assailants in
the Old City and other parts
of East Jerusalem since
August, 1985. It touched off
a wave of anti-Arab violence
by Jewish militants.
Several Arab youths were
beaten up near the scene of
the attack. Four Jewish resi-
dents of the Musrara quarter
where the Ohayons live were
detained for attacking Arab
passersby and a heavy police
guard was posted in and
around the quarter, mainly to
restrain angry Jews. Several
score Arabs were arrested for
questioning. Most have been
released.
The stabbing occured in the
Kahn E-Zeit bazaar where the
brothers were strolling with
Avi Ohayan's fiance, Leah
Azulai. She was not harmed.
Police sealed all gates to the
Old City immediately after-
wards and ordered Arab
shops in the area closed for
their own protection. The
closure order was later
rescinded.
Police Minister Chaim
Barley briefed the Cabinet on
the incident and visited the
Old City. He complained that
although there were many
eyewitnesses to the stabbing,
none, neither Jew nor Arab,
came forward to tell police
what actually happened.
Police said they believed
the attack on the Jewish
youths was the work of "Arab
nationalist terrorists." Prime
Minister Yitzhak Shamir
called for an increased police
presence in Jerusalem to
stamp out violence.

Atali, an emissary of French
President Francoise Mitten
and, briefed Israeli officials
last Sunday on the recent
meeting in Paris Mitterand
had with King Hussein of
Jordan.
According to reports,
France is considering doubl-
ing its support for Jordan's
five year economic plan.
Meanwhile, the Jordanian
monarch ended his three day
official visit to Rome with a
Papal audience and a strong
endorsement from Premier
Craxi for his five year
development plan and for
direct peace talks with Israel
in the framework of an inter-
national conference.
