million Jews in such a short
period without having found,
in each and every country,
local collaborators.
"This trial will undoubted-
ly illuminate and focus on the
role of the collaborators —
Ukrainians, Lithuanians and
Latvians — in the annihila-
tion of the Jews.
"Undoubtedly, following
Demjanjuk's case, there will
be others. It is incumbent
upon us — as long as there
are such people in the world
and we can reach them — to
bring them to trial.
"It's not something
endless. After all, in another
10 or 15 years, this phenom-
enon will die out. Time will do
its work. But as long as it ex-
ists, and as long as it is pos-
sible, they must be appre-
hended and brought to
justice."
According to Professor
Yehuda Bauer, internation-
ally renowned . Holocaust ex-
pert at the Hebrew Universi-
ty of Jerusalem, such trials
are not a matter of revenge —
"We cannot avenge the death
of a single child" — but of
principle.
"We will not be satisfied
with anything less than the
complete defeat of Nazi
ideology. We, and the world,
cannot and must not accept
the continued freedom of
criminals and mass murder-
ers who disfigure the face of
the earth.
"And if other countries can-
not bring these people to trial
— because they will not or
because they do not have the
necessary legal provisions —
we have to do it. In fact, I
believe Israel should be doing
much more than it is in this
regard, even if that means
hundreds, thousands, of
former Nazis filling up Israeli
j ails."
Professor Bauer is un-
concerned about the con-
troversy surrounding the
Demjanjuk trial. What
matters, he says, is that Israel
believes it has the necessary
evidence: "Demjanjuk has a
very good lawyer and the
judges will be very strict,
very fair. We can safely let
justice take its course."
Prosecutor Dennis Gould-
man has no reservations
about the forthcoming trial:
"We have a duty to bring
these people to trial."
Eichmann and Demjanjuk,
he says, represent the two ex-
tremes of the Nazi machine:
"Demjanjuk could never have
created a Treblinka and
Eichmann could never have
carried out his policy alone.
"He needed the hundreds,
thousands of thugs and
sadists like Demjanjuk who
were given terrible powers,
who excelled at their duties
and who enjoyed the job." ❑
