YOUR ROOTS

Have you wondered what Jewish life was like in early Detroit -
beginning in 1792?

Learn what we inherited from our grandparents and parents.

Did you know that the founding member of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek was Detroit's first kosher butcher?

Early Jewish philanthropy was centered in the synagogue
and Temple Beth El's first constitution provided that its
president had the right to grant to the needy a sum of money
not to exceed $5.

Read how the Hanna Schloss Old Timers got started.

Enjoy. a rendezvous with history as you look at the many
photographs, illustrations and maps of Detroit and the Jews
who preceeded us.

A fascinating book by Robert Rockaway titled THE JEWS OF
DETROIT 1762-1914 will enrich your knowledge of frontier
Detroit.

Buy your copy at Congregation B'nai David, 24350 Southfield
Road, at your own synagogue gift shop or sisterhood, or your
book store (If they are out of stock it can be ordered for you.)
Makes an excellent gift.

Liptzin Was First
Book Fair Guest

There's an interesting local
slant to the "Purely Commen-
tary" story (Jan. 9) on the
Festshrift published in honor of
Dr. Sol Liptzin. In 1952, he was
the first author to participate
in our first annual Jewish
Book Fair.
At my request he graciously
agreed to come to us from New
York even though we couldn't
pay him a fee or even an hon-
orarium. (Incidentally, the ex-
penses for the trip were
covered by the late Louis
LaMed, without whose moral
and financial support the fair
would have never gotten off the
ground.)
The only compensation Dr.
Liptzin has ever received from
us (and which he appreciates
very much) is the annual book
fair program brochure which I
send him every year with the
same note: "Dear Sol, See what
you started!"

Handle Problems
By Private Means

I have been a docent at the
Holocaust Memorial Center
since it opened. in October
1984. In that time, I have
guided over 100 non-Jewish
church groups and school
classes through the center. It
has been a most satisfying ex-
perience and all the volunteers
look forward to each group.
It is most unfortunate that
The Jewish News continues to
publish critical remarks and
rebuttals each week. Whatever
problems that cannot be re-
solved between any individual
and the director should be pur-
sued through the board of trus-
tees and not aired in public.
These letters cannot help the
center, and the education of
this darkest part of history
cannot be hindered by any in-
dividual.
