Terrorists
Intercepted
Tel Aviv (JTA) — An Israel
Defense Force patrol killed
three terrorists Monday night
near Markabe village in the
central sector of the south
Lebanon security zone. Accord-
ing to a military spokesman,
the terrorists were
encountered about a mile from
Kibbutz Manara in Upper
Galilee where they apparently
intended to infiltrate across
the border into Israel.
IDF sources told Israel Radio
Tuesday that the latest inter-
ception probably averted a
"major incident" as the ter-
rorists were heavily armed.
Kalachnikov rifles, revolvers,
hand grenades, rockets and a
quantity of explosives were
discovered near their bodies.
During the past ten weeks,
the IDF killed 12 terrorists in
the security zone or just north
of it. All apparently were at-
tempting to infiltrate into Is-
rael.

New York (JTA) — The
American Jewish Heritage
Committee has urged U.S.
congregations, rabbis and
other Jewish leaders to celeb-
rate either Jan. 16-17 or Jan.
23-24 as Martin Luther King
Sabbath.
The committee's national
president, Rabbi William Ber-
kowitz, urged the Jewish
community "to recall (King's)
legacy to all Americans and
reaffirm black-Jewish rela-
tions" — especially "in light of
the recent incidents of racism
and bigotry in New York's
Howard Beach which resulted
in the death of a black man."

Tel Aviv (JTA) — More than
10,000 service and administra-
tive personnel at the 29 gov-
ernment hospitals throughout
the country began an indefi-
nite strike of the hospital sys-
tem Monday, in what was de-
scribed by Health Ministry of-
ficials as one of the most seri-
ous crises in the strike-planned
government health services.
During the past three years
the hospitals have been struck
by physicians and nurses.
Hardest hit were the coun-
try's eight state-owned geriat-
ric and the 20 psychiatric hos-
pitals, which could not func-
tion Sunday night, and the 11
general hospitals. Many
patients were sent home.
The hospital staffs are de-
manding improvements in
their pay and conditions —
which they say have been
promised them repeatedly in
recent years but not carried out
— to bring the level of their
salaries up to that of similar
personnel employed in the
hospitals of the Histadrut's
Kupat Holim (sick-fund).
