Dr.. Meyer Zeff

Dr. Meyer B. Zeff, a dentist
with offices downriver, died
Jan. 17.
Born in Israel, Dr. Zeff lived
many years in Detroit prior to
moving to Woodbridge, Conn.
He was a 40-year member of
Cong. Shaarey Zedek, a board
member of the Zionist Organ-
ization of America, treasurer of
Wyandotte Lodge of B'nai
B'rith and former treasurer of
the Wyandotte congregation.
He was a 1930 graduate of the
University of Michigan School
of Dentistry.
Dr. Zeff leaves a son, Dr. Ar-
nold of New Haven, Conn.; two
daughters, Mrs. Micky (Ellen)
Fivenson of Traverse City and
Sandra of Ann Arbor; and four
grandchildren. Interment De-
troit.

Prof. H. Neufeld

Tel Aviv — Internationally
renowned cardiologist Prof.
Henry N. Neufeld of Tel Aviv
University's Sackler School of
Medicine died recently. He was
63. An Israel Prize laureate,
Prof. Neufeld was the incum-
bent of the Chaim Sheba Ex-
traordinary Chair of Cardiol-
ogy at Sackler and director of
the Heart Institute at Chaim
Sheba Medical Center.

Ethel Yolles

Ethel Yolles, a long-time
member of Cong. B'nai Moshe,
died Jan. 12 at age 89.
Born in Hungary, Mrs. Yol-
les lived most of her life in De-
troit, prior to moving to Vero
Beach, Fla., 25 years ago.
She is survived by two sons,
Sydney Goodman of West
Bloomfield and Norman
Goodman of Vero Beach, for-
merly of Southfield; six grand-
children and seven great-
grandchildren. Interment Ft.
Pierce, Fla.

Israel Improves
Fiber Optics

Jerusalem — Laser trans-
mission incorporating the
laser source within optical fib-
ers made of fluoride glass — an
idea originated at the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem —
promises to vastly improve the
range and security of both civi-
lian and military global com-
munications systems and im-
prove laser surgical tech-
niques, according to a re-
searcher at the university.
Optical fibers are increas-
ingly being used for transmis-
sion of signals, both for civilian
and military purposes, since
they use less energy for send-
ing signals than wires, can
handle many more messages
per fiber at one time than
wired electronic systems, and
cannot be broken into for un-
authorized listening (wire-
tapping). Ultimately, it is be-
lieved, optical laser-bearing
fibers will completely replace
existing cables for telecom-
munications purposes.
