Yan Appelbaum, son of Dr.
Yakov and Valentina Appel-
baum.
The Appelbaum family lives
in Novosibirsk, USSR. Dr. Ap-
pelbaum, author of more than
20 scientific articles, worked as
a physicist until 1982, when he
and his wife applied for exit
visas. He then lost his position
as senior researcher in physics
at the Novosibirsk State Uni-
versity. His wife, a ballet
dancer, also was fired from the
Novosibirsk State Theater of
Opera and Ballet.

Jewish Center
Receives Bequest
Dr. Conrad Giles, president
of the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion and Sidney Freedland,
president of the Jewish Com-
munity Center, announced the
Center received a bequest from
the Rose Staub Estate.
Interest earned from the
endowment will be utilized by
the Center in programming for
needy children and seniors.
It was the desire of the bene-
factor that her gift, in memory
of Rose and Joseph L. Staub, be
used to provide activities for
those Jewish persons in the
Metropolitan Detroit area who
could otherwise not afford
them.
During his active years, Mr.
Staub enjoyed using the men's
health club at the Center on a
daily basis.

came to Detroit, the "leaders" of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation and Community Council fled their
offices, and from the suburbs, denounced the
Zionist Rabbi, refusing to meet with him or discuss
the issues he raised.

Reform and Conservative Rabbis condemned
our invitation to Rabbi Kahane to speak to open-
minded Jews who wished to listen and question.
3 "Orthodox" Rabbis of Young Israel combined to
prevent the use of their synagogues to members
and the community who wanted to meet the Or-
thodox Rabbi and Member of Knesset.

Children of Holocaust Sur-
vivors Association of Michigan
(CHAIM) will have a meeting
at 11 a.m. Sunday at the main
Jewish Community Center,
Aaron DeRoy Studio Theater.
The film, Dark Lullabies,
will be shown. Officers and
trustees will be elected at the
meeting. Bagels and coffee will
be served at 10:30 a.m. The
public is invited.
Members will be admitted
free of charge. There is a nomi-
nal fee for non-members.
