Frontier Main Street
Unveiled At Camp

The building of a replica of a
19th Century frontier Main
Street has been completed at
the Bert L. and Toba Smokier
Pioneer Skills Center located
at Camp Maas, a resident camp
run by Tamarack Camps,
Fresh Air Society, for children
entering sixth - tenth grades.
The camp is located near Or-
tonville.

Main Street includes a gen-
eral store, post office, hotel,
barber shop/jail/dentist office,
tavern and museum. This
addition to the center more
than doubles the amount of
room and space available for
displays, classes and craft
workshops.
Main Street is the final
phase of a nine-year project to
build the Bert L. and Toba

Smokier Pioneer Skills Center
at camp.
The entire project including
Main Street costs $225,000. In
addition, a $75,000 endow-
ment fund was established by
Mrs. Smokier to provide yearly
physical and program mainte-
nance to the facility.
During the summer months,
the Smokier Pioneer Skills
Center offers candledipping,
rope-making, broom-making,
bench carpentry, bread and
funnel cake-baking, musket
shooting and pioneer toy con-
struction.
More than 8,000 elementary
school children are expected to
use the facility this coming
year through the Outdoor Edu-
cation Program offered by
Tamarack Camps to elemen-
tary schools.

Camp Reunion Sunday

Tamarack Camps will hold
their annual jamboree and re-
union at the main Jewish
Community Center, Shiffman
Hall, on Sunday at 1 p.m.
There will be more than 40
activity and crafts booths, all
offered free of charge to the
general community. Refresh-
ments also will be available
free of charge.
There will be a continuous
showing of the Tamarack
Camps movie, as well as dis-
plays, slide shows and video
presentations of the summer
programs.
Tamarack Camps, Fresh Air
Society, is a member agency of
the Jewish Welfare Federation
and the United Foundation
and provides summer residen-
tial camping experiences at
Camp Tamarack for children
entering second - fifth grades,
and at Camp Maas for pre-teen
and teens entering sixth -
tenth grades. There are nine-
day, two-week, three-week,
and four-week programs.
Summer brochures and regis-

tration materials will be avail-
able for parents in room 239 of
the Center.
For information about the
jamboree or the summer camp
programs, call the Tamarack
Camps office, 661-CAMP.
