PANACHE IN BIRMINGHAM AND MAVERICK'S IN ROYAL OAK Hour at the Ten Mile Jimmy Prentis Jewish Community Center is a very special event. Bernard Luchten started this entertainment for seniors 17 years ago. It has grown from about 12 to 70 people through his hard work and talents to brighten up-the lives of these seniors every Wednesday af- ternoon at 1:30 p.m. to around 3 p.m. They forget their cares for that exceptional hour and a half. "Alto Mamie Lawson sings Hebrew, Yiddish, just about belts everything imagineable. For over ten years, she has vol- unteered. She has been part of a trio including her present ac- companist Miriam Zacks. They have performed for 30 years. Mamie has sung with Danny Thomas. "I am a lyric soprano who in- troduced musical comedy for the seniors. I have also done a lot of nursing home volunteer work as well and performed for many of the Jewish organiza- tions. Bernard Luchten, Harry Stein and many others call me `the little singing canary.' "I told friends about it. Soon, Al Nemoff, Phyllis Bratt, Shir- ley Belkin, Ruth Kravitz and Ida Trachtenberg — a wonder- ful Russian folk singer — added to the afternoon's enjoyment. Incredible Marlene Feld has accompanied for years also, picking up any music and playing it. "We have a violist, Sid Mann, who has played with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Saul Begel, flutist, and Yit- zhak Precupets, our accor- dianist whose Russian soul de- lights particularly in accom- panying Ida Tractenberg. "This variety provides a wonderful afternoon. The love and joy you feel in this room is a very special thing. When you reach out to others you experi- ence so much personal growth and pleasure. I care about my seniors. When I'm responsible through my music and love for a smile on someone's face, my day is a better one and my world a happier one."
