priorities in order. Why on
earth react so intensely to the

figment of the imagination for
commercial purposes, when
real Jewish symbols and tradi-
tions are being ignored and
violated?
I suggest that many of us
have a severe identity crisis
when we can get so exercised
over a cartoon mouse with a
Jewish name appearing on
Christmas stockings while to-
tally accepting Chanukah
bushes, Uncle Sam the
Chanukah man, gift lists to
Bubbie and Zaydie care of the
North Pole and caroling by
Jews. Spielberg has not sold
out anything that has ever
been of value for Jews. Others
have.

Peres Backs,
U.S. Opposes
Lavi Fighter

Jerusalem (JTA) — Vice
Premier and Foreign Minister
Shimon Peres said Tuesay that
he continues to support the
Lavi, Israel's second genera-
tion jet fighter plane, despite
U.S. efforts to persuade Israel
to abandon the project on
grounds of excessive costs.
Peres spoke to reporters fol- .
lowing a meeting with U.S.
Deputy Secretary of Defense
Dov Zakheim who came to Is-
rael Sunday to propose alter-
natives to the Israel-built,
American-financed aircraft.
Israel is under heavy pressure
by the Reagan Administration
to give careful consideration to
Zakheim's report and propos-
als.
U.S. Ambassador Thomas
Pickering delivered a personal
message from Defense Sec-
urity Caspar Weinberger to
Defense Minister Yitzhak
Rabin on Monday, supporting
Zakheim's report. It is ex-
pected to be reviewed by Is-
rael's defense establishment
during the next few weeks be-
fore Rabin raises the matter
with the Cabinet.
A meeting between Zakheim
and Rabin on Monday was re-
portedly devoted to alterna-
tives to the Lavi. The Pentagon
official is said to have brought
with him at least five options,
complete with cost estimates
and production schedules for
consideration by Israel.
