THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

I read with great interest
your article "Shrinking Funds
Threat to Nursing Facilities"
(Dec. 26). As program coor-
dinator of family training,
community education and re-
source referral for the Al-
zheimer's Disease and Related
Disorders Association, I am
confronted each day by the
frustrations, agony and pain of
the many families who cannot
get the care they need for their
loved ones.
At the present time, there
are few such nursing facilities
that deal primarily with the
dementia patient. Some have
specialized units for Al-
zheimer's disease, but these
facilities experience pressure
and even prejudice from
families of other patients.
What Sheldon Goldberg says
about nursing facilities need-
ing to "specialize their ser-
vices" is paramount to the care
of patients with dementia. His
recommendations for these
facilities to "be open to change,
focus on human resources .. .
network with Federations and
health care givers . . . be future
oriented . . . and grow through
research development" is
applauded by the Alzheimer's
Disease and Related Disorders
Association.
Only if the public and our
politicians take seriously the
scarcity of funds allocated for
the care of our elderly, can we
assure our loved ones and,
eventually ourselves, proper
and pertinent support.

A Price On
The Holocaust?

All of Us local survivors of
the Holocaust feel that we owe
it to our relatives and friends
who perished in the Holocaust,
and to all those who were vic-
tims of Nazi persecution, to
supply information about our
personal experiences, while in-
carcarated, for present and fu-
ture generations to examine.
Also, to devote our time, effort
and monetary support to make
the Holocaust Memorial
Center's objectives a reality.
Unfortunately, David
Bergman (Letters, Jan. 2) is
the only local survivor who is
not willing to participate with-
out monetary remuneration. It
ill behooves David Bergman or
any survivor to try to turn a
profit from our Holocaust ex-
periences.
Because of the price tag on
Bergman's material, Rabbi
Rosenzveig justifiably refused
to accept it.

Regarding the Fievel car-
toon you ran Jan. 2: I can think
of several subjects for the car-
toonist's theatrical hook that
would have been more timely
