Hunter (Woodward) • Birmingham • 644-0588 ! 58 Friday, January 9, 1987 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS ENTERTAINMENT < LISTENING POST DANNY RASKIN TEN YEARS AGO, new- lyweds Judy and Jack Nolish invited 30 close friends to a Chanukah Latka Party in their Berkley apartment. One of the guests, Terry Brown, tossed the Nolish couple out of their kitchen and proceeded to be "head chef," making every latka . . . never dreaming he'd still be doing it today . . . turning out 800 lat- kas from 150 pounds of potatoes and 15 pounds of on- ions. The holiday tradition turned into a major celebration for two families . . . Jack and Judy, with children Rachel and Jef- frey . . . and Terry and Wendy Robins (who came into the pic- ture at Latka shindig number nine) with son Peter Robins- Brown. Attendance reached 300 last four years . . . and a latka party was even held in April back in 1980 . . . It was originally scheduled for Dec. 7, but Jack and Judy received joyous call to fly to Columbia to pick up their newly-adopted baby, Jef- frey. In the beginning, latkas and onions were washed and peeled the day before and stored in water . . . Party Number 16 re- cently took a giant leap with a change to restaurant grade, pre-washed and peeled potatoes and onions (although peeling of potatoes was stopped by party number three.) Imagine peeling 150 pounds of potatoes and cutting up 15 pounds of onions! BOB FELDMAN sends this brief bit we wrote way back when . . . in the Jewish Com- munity Center News. "Although the basketball playoffs of March 5 were over, they had to be replayed be- cause of an error in scorekeep- ing. The championship was won by the Outlaws, 36-32 .. . Members of the Outlaws team are the following: Al Betz, manager; Abe Parnas, Bob Feldman, Bud Feld, Hank Bogarod, Sam Assik, and Lloyd Averbach. High scorers were Al Ganz, Bicur Cholem, with 13 points, and Bob Feldman and Abe Parnas of the Out- laws, with 12 and 19 respec- tively." Bob was on the editorial staff with Joe Frankfort, and I was editor. LOOKING BACK ON COLUMNS OF YES- TERYEARS .. . MARCH 21, 1958 . . . "By common agreement, the TV master of ceremonies who should win this year's award for the prize boner is the hap- less soul who recently asked a small boy three times, in in- creasingly urgent tones, to name 'the cereal you love to eat every morning, sonny' . . . The youngster finally broke his si- lence by pointing out to the emcee and coast-to-coast audi- ence, 'You're hurting my arm, mister.' " MARCH 21, 1958 . . . "It served the moderator of one of the inumerable quiz shows right when his jackpot ques- tion was, 'Can you name the difference between amnesia and magnesia?' . . . The audi- ence howled with joy when the contestant, after a moment's deep deliberation, said, The fellow with amnesia has no idea where he's going.' " MAY 2, 1958 . . . "Thinking it was high time she gave her 4-year-old grandson, Beryl Ab- rams, some religious instruc- tion, Rose Benderman began by reading the story of the Cre- ation . . . 'And the Lord formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life' . . . At this point, little Beryl became in- terested and cried out ex- citedly, 'Oh, grandma! Super- man!' " MAY 23, 1958 . . . "With all his flying and atomic cannon work while with the 80th Air- borne, the worst Jerry Gurwin got was an upset stomach .. . Six weeks after leaving serv- ice, though, Jerry was struck in the face by a revolving high compression automobile engine blade, suffering a splin- tered jaw . . . And so he now calls himself, The Body Doc- tor,' entering his own business, Gurwin's Autobody Klinic on Eight Mile Rd. and Pinehurst. •\ cz\
