At the time of his arrest, ac-
cording to Justice Depart-
ment documents, Pollard had
just completed a letter to
Yagur concerning the missile
systems "designed or manu-
factured by various non-
Communist countries, which
might be available for sale to
Iran."
Beginning in the summer
of 1985, according to recent
disclosures involving the con-
troversial U.S. and Israeli
arms shipments to Iran, the
U.S. and Israeli governments
coordinated much of their
strategy in trying to forge an
opening toward "moderate"
elements in Iran and in win-
ning the release of American
hostages in Lebanon.
• Since Pollard's arrest,
the U.S. intelligence com-
munities has actually
strengthened its cooperation
with Israel in the sharing of
sensitive information which
had earlier been denied Israel.
Pollard had initially decided
to provide Israel with infor-
mation involving potential
Arab threats against Israel
after discovering that it was
not being given to Israel
through official channels.
Similar information is today
being given to Israel routine-
ly, according to U.S. and
Israeli sources.
• The U.S. intelligence
community has concluded
that there was only marginal
long-term damage to the U.S.
as a result of the information
