they saw as undue delay in
preparing his case. O'Connor
had asked for several post-
ponements on grounds that
he had been unable to find an
Israeli colleage swilling to
participate in Demjanjuk's
defense.
Demjanjuk, the first sus-
pected war criminal ever ex-
tradited to Israel for trial, has
been charged with war
crimes, crimes against hum-
anity and crime against per-
secuted people. He is alleged
to be the Treblinka death
camp guard known by in-
mates as "Ivan the 'Terrible"
for his brutality and directly
responsible for the deaths of
ten of thousands of Jews and
others. "Ivan" allegedly
operated the gas chambers.

Compensation
Issue Raised
By Activists

Bonn (JTA) — Activists of
the opposition Social Demo-
cratic Party (SPD) and the
Green Party are demanding
that the government recon-
sider its recent conclusion
that all victims of Nazi
persecution eligible for
reparations have received
compensation and no new ap-
plications will be considered,
it was reported last week.
They cited as examples of
those who have been by-
passed the victims of in-
human medical experiments
performed by Josef Mengele,
the notorious Auschwitz
death camp doctor, par-
ticularly his gruesome ex-
periments with twins.
Other groups who suffered
persecution but were never
given reparations include
gypsies, homosexuals and
victims of forced sterilization,
according to SPD and Green
members of the Bundestag.
Government sources here
have promised that the issue
will be studied again, after
the general elections sched-
uled for late January.

Israeli Bankers
Overpaid?

Jerusalem, (JTA) — Are Is-
rael's bankers overpaid, in the
context of the country's salary
scale? Tel Aviv University
Prof. Aryeh Globerson thinks
so and the Knesset and the
public want to know. But fig-
ures released by the Knesset
Finance Committee Monday,
instead of answering the ques-
tion, sparked further debate.
They showed that the ten
top-ranking officials of Bank
Leumi earn gross salaries in
the shekel equivalent of $8,000
a month, apart from their ex-
pense accounts, company cars
and telephone bills which are
paid by the bank.
