were there institutions to train

where a new golden age never
equaled either in Spain or

A byproduct of Uncle Sam's

young men, drawn to higher

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israeli
officials expressed outrage
last week over the reported
"execution" of three Lebanese
Jews held hostage by an ex-
tremist Shiite group.
The hostages were identi-
fied as Yehuda Youssef
Benesti, 33, Henri Men, and
Elie Srour, 68. Benesti, kid-
napped from his home on
May 11, 1985, was the bro-
ther of Ibrahim Benesti, kid-
napped the same month, who
was found shot to death last
February 15.
Srour, an electrical engin-
eer, was kidnapped on March
28, 1985. There was no infor-
mation available on men
whose name is not on the list
of nine Jews kidnapped in
Beirut last year, four of
whom, including Benesti's
brother, were killed over a
year ago.
The Shiite group which
claimed responsibility for the
latest hostage murders identi-
fied itself as "The Organiza-
tion of the Oppressed on
Earth."
It is believed to be linked to
Hezbullah (Army of God), a

social sciences. They intro-
duced a new discipline to the
academic curriculum: Jewish
studies.
Today, there isn't a major
college or university that
doesn't offer Jewish Studies as
an elective. A new cadre of
Jewish scholars and educated
Jews has arisen, lay people,

educated about Jews and
Jewish life. Not a few rabbis
have turned away from the
congregational rabbinate to
become professors.
Even as the Patriarch Jacob
saw his own past fused with the
hopes for the future, the bless-
ing which Jacob bestowed on
his grandchildren was the
blessing of Abraham, which
Isaac had bestowed on Jacob
and which now Jacob was to
pass down to his children's
children.
We today are the inheritors
of that blessing. The Jewish
professors in colleges today,
though they modestly would
not claim it, have lived up to
the blessing of Jacob. They in
turn are the bearers of blessing
through their scholarship and
through their influence on to-
day's college youth, in making
our people "the people of the
Book."

It announced the killings in
a note delivered to a Beirut
newspaper and said they were
in retaliation for an Israeli
shelling of a Shiite village in
south Lebanon.
No bodies have been found
by Beirut police. The gang set
conditions for return of the
bodies which include "release
of all struggles in Zionist
prisons" and "complete with-
drawal" by Israel "from the
border enclave in southern
Lebanon." Israeli officials
have refused to respond.
