Shcharansky
Blasts West
For Its Silence

New York (JTA) — Natan
Shcharansky, writing in the
\ op-ed page of the New York
;--) Times last Sunday, accused
the West of becoming "silent
accomplices in the death of
Anatoly Marchenko."
"Both Mr. Marchenko and
I posed a serious threat to the
Soviet regime by refusing to
deal with the KGB and chal-
lenging Moscow's ability to
repress its political oppo-
nents," Shcharansky wrote.
/- "The natural response in
\ both cases would have been to
/ destroy the threat by killing
• the prisoner and demonstrat-
• ing to others . . . the futility of
any resistance. In my case,
the authorities were pre-
vented from doing this by an
overwhelming show of West-
ern concern for my freedom
and well being.
›- "In Mr. Marchenko's case,
the authorities were con-
vinced that no serious
response would be forthcom-
ing. Unfortunately, their
asessment has proved to be
accurate."
According to Shcharansky,
"They managed to silence the
outcry that would have been
raised at the death of such a
prominent dissident only a
few years ago." This was
because "The West has yet to
produce a thought-out re-
sponse to the policies of
\_ Mikhail S. Gorbachev, and is
• hesitant to make any re-
sponse at all.
