certain constraints on the ac-
tivities they are prepared to
enjoy. As Shabbat observers,
Friday evening and Saturday
they will only participate in
things that are within the
boundaries of Jewish law. That
usually means spending time
with like-minded people, who
do not drive on the Sabbath,
nor watch television or movies,
and who keep the other special
laws that govern the Sabbath.
After Shabbat, the singles will
go to shows, museums, lec-
tures, go out for kosher pizza,
attend a concert, much of what
non-Orthodox singles will do.
A complaint against older
male singles, in their mid-20s
and up, is voiced by Broder.
She feels it is wrong for them to
decide after one date whether
or not a woman is worth spend-
ing more time with. "Often on a
first day you are nervous, on
the defensive, and you may
give a wrong impression of
yourself. Surely the man
should realize this." She also
has observed that Orthodox
males sometimes seem angry.
It is as though they feel intimi-
dated by modern women be-
cause they are no longer docile.
What an Orthodox male
wants in a partner is a di-
lemma for Bob. "The biggest
problem facing us as I see it is
careers for women, and expec-
tations on both sides of the
fence. Nowadays, the woman
accepting careers and possibly
having smaller families be-
cause of it, this leads to ques-
tions of what kind of woman to
marry. A man might say that
Orthodox Judaism calls for
more, rather than fewer chil-
dren. He might ask himself if
he wants a woman who'll prob-
ably be a better conver-
sationalist and be more intel-
lectual and wishes a smaller
family, or somebody who's not
as career-oriented and is will-
ing to have a larger family.
And will that person later have
some bitterness because she
never pursued a career. The
newer roles are confusing. I'm
still very nebulous about it
all."
Not all Orthodox singles be-
lieve the traditional ways are
the only method of finding
happiness. The so-called 'mod-
ern Orthodox' approach dating
differently. Singles weekends
for Orthodox people are held at
hotels in the Catskills in New
York, and also in Chicago. And
there is a small segment of the
Orthodox community who
have decided to remain single,
ignoring well-meaning friends'
and families' efforts.
Detroit's Orthodox singles'
community is small. No num-
bers are available because of
the lack of any structured pro-
grams. But its members want
to maintain their convictions
and lifestyle, and many believe
in the tried-and-true tech-
niques of the shidduch,
matchmaking. Most don't date
casually, but some will date
non-Orthodox people. The ten-
dency to see New York and
other large cities as the answer

to the small numbers results in
a lot of movement between the
cities. The question arises .. .
Will the situation in Detroit
change in the future? 0
