would be as great a calamity as
the Iranian Islamic revolution.
It is difficult to predict the
exact lineup of the Arab states
should war break out. How-
ever, it is fair to say that Israel
would be targeted by both
moderates and especially radi-
cals, particularly since the call
for "Jihad" (Holy War) to free
the Middle East of a non-
Moslem presence would act as
a rallying cry to unify all sides.
In exhorting his 'armies going
into battle against Iraq, the
Ayotollah Khomeini has been
documented as calling for "the
liberation of Jerusalem" after
crushing Iraq.
But Arabs are practical
people, particularly when they
are losing.
It is more than conceivable
that, in the Iran-Iraq war for
instance, one or the other side
would attempt to make a
short-term military alliance
with Israel. (Note the recent
bizarre partnership between
the United States, Saudi
Arabia and Israel in the ship-
ment of arms to Iran.) After all,
Israel has the most powerful
and effective defense force in
the Middle East. Its air force
casts a wide umbrella and can

act to protect or attack.
Should Israel agree to line
up, for example, with a
Saudi-Egyptian-Jordanian
axis, for example, that combi-
nation could field a most pow-
erful army.
Egypt has the numbers to fill
in the infantry gap, while Is-
rael's infantry acts as a fast
strike force. Saudi Arabia has
a large squadron of F-15s, plus
four American AWACS and
may order five more, which can
be used to pickup battlefield in-
formation on the ground and in
the air. Combined with Israel's
squadron of F-15s and F-16s,
plus her own aircraft, large
sectors of the area can be con-
trolled in the air.
Israel would have to be ex-
ceedingly cautious in running
with the pack, because she
could not tell when the pack
would turn on her. However,
for the short term, it may be to
Israel's advantage to form
short term alliances while a
full conflict rages.
Clearly, it would be wise for
the Arab countries to start to
test Israel for a working rela-
tionship which could blossom
against whatever common
enemy may emerge.

The Buying Of
Zionist Elections

I have recently received a
mailing-piece containing two
letters, one from Shimon Peres
and another from General
(Res.) Uzi Narkiss. The en-
velope bears the official
emblem of the State of Israel,
yet the enclosed reply-
envelope is addressed to
League for Labor Israel and
Friends of Labor Israel in Mil-
waukee, Wisconsin.
Mr. Peres' letter calls on me
(and presumably countless
others) "to be counted when we
elect delegates to the upcoming
Zionist Congress" and refers to
the elections as a "referundum
on Israel's future." General
Narkiss' letter is more explicit.
He writes: "As a member of
Friends of Labor Israel, you
can cast a vote on the future of
Israel."
What is profoundly disturb-
ing about this mailing-piece is
that notwithstanding its mis-
leading State of Israel trap-
pings, it is a narrowly-partisan
appeal for votes. Moreover,
what makes the high-sounding
verbiage of the letters from two
distinguished Israeli leaders so
patently unseemly and inap-
propriate is that they seek to
acquire memberships and
votes at "bargain-basement"
prices.
General Narkiss indicates
that "you can have your say for
a very modest price — $5 per
membership — barely enough
to cover cots." The rules gov-
erning the elections to the
World Zionist Congress stipu-

late that one must be a member
of a bonafide Zionist organiza-
tion to be eligible to vote. To
the best of my knowledge, no
legitimate American Zionist
organization charges $5 in
membership dues. To circum-
vent this "technicality," a
"front" organization — Friends
of Labor Israel — was set up to
garner "cheap" votes for the
members of the American
Zionist Federation, nor is it in-
cluded among Zionist organi-
zations in the 1986 American
Jewish Year Book.
It is sad, indeed, that Shimon
Peres and General Narkiss
have allowed themselves to be
"used" in what is obviously a
devious electioneering ploy. I
believe that only the gullible
and the ill-informed will be
persuaded that they can help
shape "the future of Israel" for
a paltry $5.
