MARC CHICOREL, DPM Yad Vashem Prepares Two New Memorials DAVID LANDAU Special to The Jewish News erusalem — A massive hall of haunting lights and mirrors, and a si- lent, artificial valley are two striking projects now under construction at the Yad Vas- hem Holocaust Memorial. The chamber of mirrors is an underground hall situated just east of the main buildings. It is the concept of world renowned Israeli-Canadian architect Moshe Safdie, who has become the foremost planner, architect and executor of massive proj- ects in modern-day Jerusalem. The Hall of Mirrors, nearly completed, is a memorial to the one million Jewish children killed in the Holocaust. The core of the chamber is a six- sided room entirely covered with mirrors. In the center of this room is a system of prisms, and in its heart is a memorial light. The visitor, entering this chamber through a rough- hewn underground passage, will be overwhelmed by an ethereal, surrealistic atmos- phere. He or she will walk around the chamber on a series of darkened elevated walk- ways, but surrounded at all points by the reflected light and hundreds of smaller memorial lights, suspended as though in space. Safdie acknowledged that his is an unprecedented ap- proach to designing memo- rials, which is usually consid- ered a conservative and staid area of architecture. The entrance-way deliber- ately made use of an existing cave entrance in order to create the impression of entering into the bowels of the earth. The passage beyond the entrance is flanked by huge unpolished rocks. As the visitor enters he or she hears, faintly, the sounds of children singing the songs of the Holocaust. The visitor walks first into a triangular room, where he is surrounded by photos of chil- dren taken during the Holocaust years. From there, the visitor moves through gloomy darkness into the six-sided room to face the lights and mir- rors. The visitor then emerges through a funnel-shaped exit to a hilltop surveying the vista of Jerusalem. The valley project is less novel. Dug out of the landscape south of the Yad Vashem main buildings, its motif is a colossal wall of commemoration. Copyright JTA, Inc. Medicine and Surgery of the Foot 3646 Rochester Rd.
