humidifier when you find
blankets sticking together or
getting static-shock as you
shuffle across the carpet.
Don't just lie there, do
something. If you still have
trouble falling sleep, leave the
bedroom, read a book, do a
crossword puzzle, but keep
busy until your eyelids start
to droop.
Restrict the use of the
bedroom to sleeping and keep
it from becoming a TV room,
den or office. It should be
kept a totally stress-free
environment.

Heart-To
Heart
Facts

Home is where the heart
is. It's where the heart at-
tack is, too. According to the
Framingham Heart Study
Group in Framingham,
M-ass., an average American
child currently has one
chance in three of having a
major heart attack before
reaching the age of 60. Here
are nine more facts to take
heart:
1. The peak age for that
age-old ill — the heart at-
tack — is 45 and up.
2. Your heart is at its
biological best at age 26.
3. The alternate beating of
the heart creates the pulse,
which is felt anywhere
artery crosses bone near the
skin's surface.
4. A typical 185-horsepower
(350-cubic-inch displace-
ment) car engine gets about
15 miles per gallon. At 1/249
hp, the human heart (if it
were constructed by General
Motors) would get .000337.
5. The average heart pumps
2 to 21/2 oz. of blood in less
than one second and 5
quarts in one minute.
6. Why is blood thicker
than water? Because it's on-
ly 90 percent water. The rest
is protein, salt, sugar and
acids.
7. The heart beats close to
101,000 times per day,
pumping 5 ounces of blood
into circulation each time.
8. Your body's biggest mus-
cle normally beats 72 times
per minute and pumps in
the vicinity of 4000 gallons
of blood daily.
9. Often called the "miracle
muscle," the heart is really
a double pump. When re-
laxed, blood enters and fills
the upper chambers. When
contracted, blood is forced
into the lower ventricles.

Costs

Q: Dear Dr. Fischer, I've often wondered
why you don't charge for the initial
first visit to your office?
A: Not everyone is well suited for
psychotheraputic treatment, there-
fore, I don't believe a patient should
be charged for something they may
not benefit from.
