Those drugs include phenothiazines, used to treat anxiety, depres- sion, nausea and other con- ditions patients or people with "slow" thyroid, strokes, paralysis, arthritis, Parkin- son's disease alcoholics low-income people who can't afford high heating bills or who live in houses with no heat. Some signs of hypothermia include: indifference to cold. An elderly person may not shiver or notice discomfort while others shiver and put on sweaters slurred speech slow and sometimes ir- regular heartbeat sluggishness and confusion slow, shallow breathing. If you suspect hypother- mia, take the person's temperature. If the ther- mometer registers 95 degrees or below, or if it fails to register a temperature, sum- mon medical help immediate- ly. The best way to prevent hypothermia is to check in on older persons once or twice a day, especially during severe cold snaps.
