Top Executives

America's top executives
are much more likely to be
found teeing off or swinging
a nine-iron than hitting a ten-
nis ball or pumping iron, ac-
cording to a nationwide
survey of executive sports
and exerise habits.
The survey revealed that
golf is over four times more
popular than tennis among
leading executives and in-
finitely more popular than
running or gym workouts.
The survey was based on
interviews with vice presi-
dents and personnel directors
of 100 of the nation's 1,000
largest corporations. They
were asked to name the most
popular top executive activi-
ty. Here are the findings:
• 58 percent of the
respondents said that golf
was the most popular activi-
ty among corporate leaders.
• 16 percent gave first place
in the popularity poll to
jogging.
• 13 percent felt that tennis
was the first choice of
business leaders.
• Running, racquet ball and
walking each received 3 per-
cent of the tally.
• Workouts (calesthenics,
exercise
weight-lifting,
machines, etc.) were at the
very bottom of the list,
chosen by only 1 percent of
those surveyed.
The survey observed that
"golf is the least solitary of all
the activities. It provides op-
portunities for ongoing
business conversations,
enabling the participants to
simultaneously exercise both
physically and financially."
A previous survey had
established a strong link be-
tween physical activity and
income. It revealed that
middle-management execu-
tives who regularly engage in
a sports activity earn thou-
sands of dollars more than
their sedentary colleagues.
