the major risk factor in strokes accord-
• ing to the AHA. The heart is a muscle
that works like a pump. The pumping
action of the heart changes depending
> on the situation. For example, the
harder the heart works, the higher the
blood pressure runs.
High blood pressure adds to the
heart's workload often causing it to
enlarge and become weaker over time.
When high blood pressure is combined
) with other conditions, such as smoking
or obesity, the risk of heart disease
increases.
High blood pressure isn't some-
thing to take lightly. Individuals with
uncontrolled high blood pressure are
three times as likely to develop heart
disease, six times as likely to develop
congestive heart failure, and seven
times more likely to have a stroke.
/- The problem for many people is
that they don't know they have high
blood pressure because there are no
_ symptoms. And even when they are
diagnosed as hypertensive, they don't
feel sick. However, many people have
side effects from the medication they
are taking to control their pressure.
/- These side effects make them feel ill
and they stop taking their medication.
"That's the danger," explains
Wynne," and the possibility of heart
disease increases. But it shouldn't.
There are lots of medications available
and the patient has to work with the
doctor to find the right recipe."
In addition to medication, high
blood pressure can sometimes be con-
trolled through diet, particularly by
limiting the amount of salt. Beverly
Peiss, Registered Dietician at the Car-
• diovascular Fitness and Rehabilita-
• tion Program at Sinai Hospital, ex-
plains that sodium, a major ingredient
of salt, attracts water. "The heart's job
) is to keep fluids distributed through-
out the body. If excess sodium is con-
sumed, the excess water that is at-
), tracted by the sodium causes the heart
to work harder," says Peiss.
Another leading contributor to
heart disease is atherosclerosis — the
) build-up of fats and cholesterol in the
artery walls. Cholesterol is a waxy,
yellow substance found in food and
manufactured by the liver. Choles-
terol itself is not bad. In fact, it's essen-
tial to cells and nerves and is found
among the fats in the bloodstream
called lipids.
However, a high level of lipids in
the bloodstream — called hyper-
lipidemia — is a major risk factor for
coronary heart disease. As cholesterol
and other lipids build up in the inner
\ lining of blood vessels, an artery may
close off completely or a blood clot may
form and block the artery. Blockage of
